Children can use their toys to act out situations that have frustrated them, allowing them to work through new emotions in a safe and healthy way. Puppet theaters are great wooden toys that allow young children to express their fears and work out their social problems. Social skills are also learned through cooperative play with others. Many of the wooden toys recommended to aid development in other areas of growth also provide a number of social benefits.
You said it, Javamom... so many toys today on the market are "plastic". We have a collection of wooden blocks in all shapes and sizes (hand sizes, though) which continues to attrackt all of our children again and again. You can build and rebuild and rebuild.

Funny, my kids like the building and rebuilding. I think this is why they never got into Playmobil (that and perhaps the fact that we never went out of our way to purchase the stuff) -- if they went for plastic toys, then it was lego where the desire to construct, build and rebuild can be transferred to the new medium.

The boy in the picture is playing with Autoblox. This is a very nice, wooden toy that my 4 year old boy and 2 year old girl love playing with. What's not to like? It's got wheels, can be taken apart and put together in different ways and build with like blocks. It also looks pleasant to an adult who does not like an excessive amount of plastic, which, unfortunately for us, it what the majority of toys are made of.
