Cloth Diapers- What are all the different types?
So what are cloth diapers? Cloth diapers come in many shapes and forms now and it can become very confusing. There are flat cloth diapers, prefolds, doublers, fitted cloth diapers, cloth diaper covers, all in one cloth diapers, pocket diapers, and Inserts. Almost all of these diapering systems come in a variety of materials such as Hemp, Cotton, Fleece, Bamboo, and Wool. It is no wonder why people reach for disposables as a first option, there is less variety.
Let us start with Flat Cloth Diapers. Flat cloth diapers are simply a square or rectangular piece of material that you can fold to any size to fit around your newborn, baby or toddler. They don’t have any fasteners so either pins or diaper fastener can be used, or a diaper cover will help keep it in place. Flat cloth diapers can be the most cumbersome of cloth diaper types but they are the most economical because they can be used with any age of your child and can continue to be used while potty training at night. These are great to have in your diaper bags because they can also be used as inserts, wipes, burp pads, change pads and any time you may need a cloth around.
Flat Cloth diapers can come in different materials and all will have various degrees of absorption. Keep in mind that cotton flannel flat cloth diapers are found in most department stores but are not the most absorbent so you will need to purchase more as you will be changing them more frequently. I did have these initially for my son but found them difficult to fold properly as he grew. Also as he got stronger it was harder to get everything in place before he’d turn or move. So I bought prefolds next.
Prefolded cloth diapers or Prefolds are a rectangular piece of material that has several layers to it and it is sewn together. Usually the middle section will have an absorbent insert also sewn into place. At Little P Baby Store we carry Organic cotton pre-fold by Bummis. They are a 4×8x4 ply which is a high-quality, absorbent prefold, which means the outer layers have 4 layers of fabric and the middle panel has 8 layers of fabric. Prefolds are easier to use than the flat cloth diapers mainly because you can easily fit them around your baby for a snug fit. Keep in mind, like the Flat cloth diapers, they are best used with a cloth diaper cover. They can also be fastened with pins or diaper fasteners. Regardless of the name of the prefold, Chinese prefolds, Indian prefolds, or others, they all have the same idea but remember the uniqueness is in the materials that are used and that relates to the absorbency. We carry the highest-quality absorbent prefolds that are unbleached as bleaching can damage the fibers. Also remember that these require a cloth diaper cover.
Fitted cloth diapers are named because they are meant to fit around your baby or toddler and don’t require any folding. One of the benefits of fitted cloth diapers is their ease of use. They will come with either snaps or Velcro for a fast and easy diaper change. Most brands will have elastic around the legs and waist to contain any mess. For most parents fitted cloth diapers are the easiest to use but they do still require a separate diaper cover. They provide a great fit for your child at that age, but you will need to buy different sizes as your child grows. There is a small variety at one size fits all options for fitted cloth diapers. At Little P Baby Store we carry 4 brands of fitted cloth diapers such as Bambineo Bamboo, Bamboozle Bamboo, Bamboo Baby and Baby Milano fitted cloth diaper. Bamboo is a naturally antibacterial and anti-allergic product that is easily cultivated and thrives without the use of fertilizers or pesticides. It does not drain the soil’s nutrients and does not require monoculture farming. It is gorgeously soft, has healing properties and is 70 to 80% more absorbent than cotton.
The next type of cloth diaper is the pocket cloth diaper, such as the BumGenius 3.0. This diapering type comes with an inside pocket that you can insert padding, has a waterproof outer layer and closures. They are extremely easy to use. Some times these are mistake for all-in-one diapers but they are close in structure. With the pocket diaper you insert a padded material into the pocket and then place them on your baby. The diaper cover itself is sewn to the inner fleece layer so that when your baby urinates the moisture is pulled into the absorbed insert and away from your baby. These are becoming extremely popular due to the capabilities of keeping moisture away from the baby, unlike the first few listed types of cloth diapers. Remember to purchase your inserts when looking at pocket cloth diapers and the same rule applies the different materials for inserts will relate to the absorbency so try to choose inserts that are layered if cotton or more absorbent types like Bamboo or Terry cloth.
So the final type of cloth diapers is the All-in-one (AIO) diaper. They are exactly what you would expect, they have it all; inner absorbent core, waterproof cover, front closure, snug fit around the legs and waist. No need to folding, pinning, stuffing or wrapping. These diapers are more expensive because they are all combined in one but they are still cheaper than disposables. We have a few different varieties to choose from; Indisposables, Bamboo Baby All-in-one, and Snug to Fit by Dri-Line.
Cloth diaper covers are unique in that they can be reused a few times before needing to be washed, if they are not soiled or have a smell. Cloth diaper covers can come with Velcro or snap closures, such as Baby Milano cloth diaper covers, Bummis Super Brite or Bummis Super Whisper wrap. These covers can come in different fabrics such as Vinyl (PVC), Polyurethane Laminate (PUL), and Nylon. Vinyl is no longer recommended as it will not hold up to washing and they can leak into your child’s skin. PUL is a laminate that is applied over either polyester or cotton to make the cover waterproof. They are machine washable and can be dried. They will withstand the test of time and can be used for many years. Nylon cloth diapers are similar to PUL but should not go in the drier. Both of these are a much better alternative to Vinyl due to its breathable and softer qualities.
I hope this was able to answer some questions about the different types of cloth diapering systems. Next part of the series will cover “HOW DO I CHOOSE?”

| Question by Ari: How do I get started using cloth diapers?
I am considering cloth diapers but know nothing about using them. How many diapers will I need to start with for a newborn? What other accessory items will I need to start with? What is the initial cost? Is a diaper service necessary or is washing them yourself simple enough? Is there a brand or style of diaper you have had luck with? Any tips at all will be very much appreciated!

I bought the Target brand plain white towelling nappies. The ones you have to fold yourself.
I have 3 dozen per child. Costs about a pack in Australia.
I also bought about 6 packs of nappy pins, I was forever loosing them. Plus a couple packets of nappy liners (if you are Australian, get the Wollies brand ones, super strong!!)
I fold them kite style.
I also wash them myself. I have 2 nappy buckets filled with boiling hot water, and a cup of pure soap.
Get 2 different colours, so you know where your putting what. I put soild in one, wee in the other.
I leave to soak in there over 24 hour period. Then chuck them into the washing machine, and rinse.
The wash with a cup of lemon juice, to keep the smelling lovely.
For the stained ones. A couple of hours in a bucket of boiling water and bleach does the trick. Then wash with tomorrows nappies.
What do you think? Answer below!

Part 2 of the diaper discussion. In this vlog, I talk about how I wash my cloth diapers.

Well if you have a bit of money to invest in the cloth diapers then I would sya try the g-diaper. I use them for my daughter (regular ones when we are out because I dont really feel like having to deal with it all, but the G’s are very easy to go out in). They are a cloth cover/holder that you slip like a giant pad into and then another into that. They are kind of expensive but the liners are actually biodegradable if you want to toss em, or if you have a powerful toilet you can use the swizzle stick to break em down in the toilet and flush em (never tried this though we have a septic tank). Go to gdiapers.com. Honetly we were going to switch totally to cloth ones but then last month Parents magazine had this article. One of their writers, a dad, did a test of all the major types of cloth including the g diapers, and also the reg. kind of diaper. Basically if you are doing it for enviroment reasons the experts he talked to said that unless you use something like the g-diaper that dosnt need constant washing then you arent helpin the enviroment any by using cloth. You are just hurting it in different ways, all the energy it takes to run a washing machine and also all the water it wastes, especially since you need to soak them and then wash them. You might as well stick to disposable diapers. Sorry to disappoint you, but if you still want to give it a go I’d use the G’s.
HI i have been a user of cloth diapers and beleive me ..i was as confused as u are..I am not against using cloth diapers at such a young age…i would say it is not proper time to use cloth diapers yet..as a new born would sleep for long time he would wake up easily if he can feel little bit of wetness..i had the same problem with my daughter..so i used cloth diapers when she was about three months old and have been using since then..she is seven months old now , ..we luv using cloth diapers on her…
I used gerber birds eye 6ply cloth diapers available at walmart..and i know they are many more available out there…but these worked just fine…also its lot of work initially ..but we will get used to it..mind you..iam stay at home mom and so it doesnt seem that much of work to me…
i use disposables when we go out and during night sleep
www.greenmountaindiapers.com Everything you’ll ever need to know about cloth diapering, from different types to folding to washing (and their prefold diapers are the absolute best out there!).
There’s lots of info online about using cloth. http://www.diaperpin.com has a tutorial for those new to using cloth. There’s also a lot of info in the forums at http://www.diaperswappers.com and http://www.diapertraders.com .
My personal favorite diapers are fleece pocket diapers, like Green Acre Designs. They’re waterproof and breathable, and really soft. I personally don’t like PUL diapers, like Fuzzi Bunz and bum Genius, because they make my son’s butt clammy, but tons of people love those diapers, so maybe you would too.
Whatever you do, don’t buy cheap cloth diapers at department stores, like the Gerber prefolds I got at Walmart and used on my first two babies. They’re horrible. Trust me.
I wash mine at home just fine. You’ll find plenty of info about how to wash diapers at Diaper Pin and elsewhere on the internet.
I have been looking for an Iris container online. What size is that?
thanks for the tips!
This really helped explain things to me who is about to be a grandma for the first time and my son and daughter in law will be using these new type of cloth diapers that I just didn’t understand about with “liners” and all! LOL
how do you strip the cloth diapers
So glad that I found this tutorial. I bought alot of BG’s today and the women at the store had no idea how to explain washing prcedure so these tips are GREAT thanks
This is very helpful. I was wondering how we were going to wash these diapers. Thanks for the tips!!
Thanks for your ealrier response. I was wondering if these diapers are suitalbe for newborns? They look a bit bulky
Glad to help! Good luck!
I have been using the Bum Genius Odor Remover or Biokleen Bac-Out sprays, they’ve been very helpful at keeping stains and odors at bay. Also, not allowing the diapers to sit too long in your diaper pail before washing.
Also, be sure to strip your diapers when you notice odors — or if you notice baby’s bottom starting to get irritated.
If you have a newborn, you can just run it right through the wash.
Couple of options for older babies: Shake solids out into the toilet, spray with Bum Genius Odor Remover or Biokleen Bac-Out, then put in a dry pail until ready to wash. Or you can buy a sprayer that attaches to your toilet, so that you can rinse off the poo into the toilet before putting in your diaper pail.
I will do a load every other day, so the diapers are not sitting in the pail too long.
how do u clean a diaper with poo on it? also,do u leave the poo on the diaper till you are ready to run a washing load?
have any of yours disintegrated with all this washing?
how many bum genius do you have.. how many should I get…. 20 -24?
excellent . thanks I didnt know what to do with washing then.
Thank you!! You are making this heap of information much easier to sort through. This is also my first baby and you’ve been so helpful!!! Thank you!!
great important little tips
This was SO helpful… thank you!!!
This was really helpful. I used disposables with my first and I plan on using cloth with my second. I was so confused about cloth diapers and how they worked, but I feel like a pro just from watching your videos!
don’t use spray and wash to prevent stains, either? does the enzyme or odor remover help prevent the stains?
Great video! Thanks for sharing your insight with me. I will be starting to cloth diaper in a few months when my baby arrives
great job!
Thanks for the great tips!!! I’m 21 weeks pregnant and have been looking at the pros and cons of both disposables and cloth diapers. This was very helpful!
Another great one! Thanks again for putting this out there for anyone to see. It is so helpul when there is limited information available. Thanks!
