Lullaby and goodnight
One of the oldest traditions for parents with newborn babies -
and even slightly older children - is the singing of a lullaby to
send your child off to sleep. The sound of soothing music is something
that helps any child, and indeed a lot of adults, to ease off into a
peaceful sleep that gives more relaxation than any other kind of sleep.
Every child will have a favorite lullaby, so it is worth trying out a
range of the traditional ones, and if you are creative even making up
a few of their own. At this age your child will not know the meaning of
the words but they will pick up how they sound, and may be able to pick
out their own name.
Ad-libbing the lyrics can make the singing of a lullaby a bit more
special for you, and as they grow older will delight your child as well.
Putting their name into the lullaby is one thing that a lot of parents
like to do, but making up a story and putting it to the tune of a well-known
lullaby or one you have made up yourself is also a good option. Children
learn by repetition, so however off-the-wall your sense of humor might be
it is probably worth keeping out of the lyrics anything you don't want your
child to suddenly repeat at an inopportune moment. It is, however, the tune
that does the work in a lullaby, so you could sing the football scores or
the share values to them in the same soft voice and they will appreciate it.
