Sleeping problems are often caused by poor sleeping associations created unknowingly by parents. A sleep association is something that a baby learns that signals sleep to them. But this is easily corrected, especially when they are still a few months old. Sleep is a high priority for all new parents. As every parent knows, the early days can be really difficult, as babies are up every few hours in the night looking for a feed. Some babies sleep really well from the outset, but these children are rare indeed. The majority of parents experience difficulties with sleep deprivation, and unfortunately for some, this can last well into the toddler years and beyond. So how do you create a better sleeping environment for your baby? There are lots of things you can do to help create the right sleep associations and avoid the bad ones. A sleep association is essentially what the baby associates with going to sleep – in other words it is a learned response. Babies are clever because they get to know these associations by repitition – the more you do a certain behaviour before they sleep, the more they associate that behaviour with sleep itself. So for example, if you always bath the baby before bedtime, they will get to know in time that bathtime signals sleep time. The trick is to create sleep associations which work without reliance on the parent to help the child to sleep, Some examples of poor sleep associations includes: – rocking baby to sleep – holding baby to sleep – patting/stroking baby – nursing or feeding baby to sleep – use of a dummy Why are these poor sleep associations? Because they work by allowing the baby to rely on either you or a pacifier to help them sleep. This creates long-term problems because each time your child wakes at night, they will require your assistance to help put them back to sleep. Imagine you always rock baby to sleep. As wonderfully nurturing as it seems, what will you do when the child gets older and heavier and puts pressure on your back because you are struggling to rock your toddler to sleep – something that can take an hour or so in some cases? The best solution is creating sleep associations that do NOT rely on you to help them sleep. These can include: – creating a routine – winding down – dimming the lights and speaking softly – placing tired baby in cot in the dark and calming them down by speaking softly and not picking them up – differentiating between night and day – removing the dummy before baby falls asleep – never allowing baby to sleep in your arms – always let baby sleep in the cot These are just some suggestions, but there are many other things you can and should do to improve sleep. If you stick to your guns, you should see an improvement in sleep patterns within a week, and certainly within two weeks. With older children, you may need to resort to sleep training methods to help them sleep soundly. Learning the correct behaviour takes time, but the above mentioned ideas are the best way to help a newborn learn the correct sleep habits that will set them up for a lifetime.

Baby Buddies, Inc recently introduced its new dentist-designed Babys 1st Toothbrush (also known as Angel BrushTM) that will help parents care for an infants often neglected gums and first teeth.

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) March 29, 2005 — Baby Buddies, Inc recently introduced its new dentist-designed Babys 1st Toothbrush (also known as Angel BrushTM) that will help parents care for an infants often neglected gums and first teeth.

The dentist-designed Angel Brush is soft, pliable and molded entirely of silicone, with a unique H-shaped head that is filled with tiny soft bristles to clean all sides of top and bottom teeth at the same time. As recommended by pediatric dentists and often neglected by parents, properly cleaning an infants teeth and gums helps remove sugars and bacteria that can lead to future decay.

There is nothing else like the Angel Brush on the market,” said owner Phil Krause. This product is gentle, safe and effective, and much easier to use than cotton swabs and fingers to clean gums and teeth.”

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry:
-Infants should see a pediatric dentist when their first tooth appears or by their first birthday.
-Prior to that, and until the child is 2-3 years of age, the teeth and gums should be cleaned with water and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
-The most important reason to focus on dental care so early is to begin a thorough dental prevention program and prevent Early Childhood Caries (also known as baby bottle tooth decay.)
-Children with healthy teeth chew food easily, learn to speak clearly and smile with confidence.

The design is so clever,” said Krause. A toddler, with appropriate supervision of course, can easily clean and massage their own teeth and gums, paving the way for continued oral care as they grow older.”

The Angel Brush will retail for .95 and will be available at juvenile product retailers nationwide.

This unique product can viewed and images downloaded by visiting www.babybuddy.com/pages/toothbrush.html. To request additional information, product samples or high resolution graphics, please contact Dan McLean at 813.961.0757 or dan@demtoday.com

Listening to my two girlfriends talking both about their daughters who “will not sleep” and seeing how those moms could also need a break tosses me back to the days that my little ones had the hardest times sleeping through the night. Apart from illness, when you simply can expect to NOT sleep at night because you have to tend to your infant, you may find that there are some simple issues, when removed or dealt with, are actually hindering your baby from sleeping.

Here are a few articles around the web which I find to be helpful, each in it’s own right, to understanding what could be causing your wee one trouble finding a peaceful slumber.

So there you have it… um. You know, you need to find your own pace. Main thing: if you have a good understanding of your baby and her needs, you know these are met and your baby is healthy, then you need to find your comfort zone which can lead to “ferberize” or “co-sleeping” and pretty much anything in between. Rule of thumb: if you are comfortable, relaxed and feel comfortable in your role as a parent, your baby will be more at ease and you will find your way together.

Bottle Feeding Baby

Bottle Feeding Tips

Buying a breast pump is an excellent idea, unless your planning on staying attached to your baby for the next 6-12 months! (Check here for information on how to pump breast milk stress free.)

You deserve nights out, don’t feel bad, your entitled! If you’re exclusively breastfeeding your baby it can be a challenge to start bottle feeding baby. Most doctors or lactation consultants say to wait 6 weeks before introducing a bottle to your baby, to ensure proper nursing habits. The choice is up to you, from my experience waiting too long makes taking a bottle harder on your baby. You will notice that your baby probably won’t take a bottle from you(mom). Babies can smell your breast milk from a cross the room. For the first little while, until your baby gets accustom to taking a bottle, it would probably be easier to get someone else to give the bottle to your baby.

Choose a bottle that is right for you and your baby. This may take some experimenting!

Use a slow flow nipple (Stage 1) to ensure the flow of milk is right for your baby. As your baby gets older you can switch the flow of the bottle to a fast flow nipple.

Always check and re-check the temperature of the milk in the bottle.

Tricks of the trade!
Getting your breastfed baby to take a bottle can be very hard, especially in the beginning. A trick that I use to use is the switch-a-roo.

Place your baby in your arms as you would if you were going to breastfed. If your baby uses a pacifier put it in your babies mouth, letting your baby get use to sucking the pacifier. When you feel they are content, pull the pacifier out and quickly replace it with the bottle.

This may take a couple of tries to perfect but eventually they will get the idea and start sucking.

Feeding the baby Cuddles and comfort are as important for you baby as feeding is. Don’t let anyone tell you that your bottle-fed baby won’t bond with you. There is no reason why bottle -feeding can’t be a warm and loving experience. If it’s summer you can let your baby feel your bare skin. Make sure that you are comfortable. Feeding your baby in an awkward position will only compound the aches and pains most new mothers feel. Never feed your baby while he or she is lying down. The milk can go up the tiny tubes and into baby’s ears causing ear infections. Cradling your baby in your arms is the easiest position. Don’t prop the bottle and leave a young baby to feed itself; it is dangerous. To protect your clothes and your baby’s clothes, remember to put a bib on the baby. Younger babies need to be burped two or three times during each feed. They find it hard to burp naturally on their own. If your baby is crying, screaming and squirming during a feed he or she probably needs to be winded. Sit your baby up (making sure to support the head if he or she is a newborn.) Rub baby’s back gently in round circular movements until he burps. This may take a while. Wind usually becomes less of a problem as a baby gets older. When your baby has finished his bottle tip any left over milk out. Bacteria from your baby’s mouth can be introduced into the milk and multiply quickly. If your baby is a newborn (under 3 months) tip the milk out within twenty minutes after the feed.

Babies cry when they are hungry, when they are tired, and when they are scared. But sometimes, some babies cry because they have colic.

So what is colic–or what are indications of colic?

a loud, constant and continuous cry for hours for no obvious reason. Babies who have colic tend to cry even after being fed and changed.

out-of-the-ordinary things that your baby does while crying: face turning red and staying that way, tightening her hands into a fist and legs constantly kicking. If your baby typically doesn’t act this way when she is hungry or needs to be changed, your baby could have colic.

when your baby to be unable to sleep or eat because he cannot stop crying

Picking the baby up, and other normal comforting techniques do not seem to help as much with colicky babies, and this causes parents to worry and visit their doctor.

When the doctor cannot find a medical cause for the crying, and the baby is not hurt or hungry when he cries, then he or she is diagnosed with colic.

Baby Colic Relief – The Fastest Way To Stop Your Baby’s Colic. Although the medical community is still grappling with this issue – they still don’t know what causes colic in babies – we know a great deal about relieving colic pain and so doing, getting the crying to stop.. There are many relief techniques, the trick is in finding those that work and soothe your baby!!!.
********************

We don’t know yet what causes colic, but some think it has something to do with an immature nervous system or sensitive temperament of the baby. Others think it is related to the baby’s digestive system.

In particular, some doctors think the baby cries because of tummy cramps and gas buildup. This theory has not been proven, but is also not discredited.

Some cases of colic are associated with lactose intolerance, or a lack of probiotic bacteria in the baby’s gut. Eventually, babies do grow out of it, usually when they are about four months old.

Understanding when your baby could start teething will help you to provide comfort and relief to your infant. Unlike colic, which your baby may not even encounter, you are 100% sure to hit some rocky times when the teeth begin to shoot through the gums. Never fear, help is near!

According to studies, most of the babies start teething when they are about five or six months old. But some do experience teething much earlier which is considered normal as well. What are the symptoms of babies teething? Below are some of the common signs of teething:

Infant Teething Symptoms:

When your infant’s’ gum become red, swollen and sore

When your baby cries without any significant reasons

When there is increased drooling

Chewing on things and putting things in the mouth

Less common symptoms of baby teething:

Eventually an increase in body temperature (with red cheeks and listlessness) or even fever

Diarrhea, diaper rash

What the best ways to relieve the pain arising from babies teething? Some may suggest that children Tylenol and topical medications be used in order to alleviate the symptoms. But that would only be effective for a short period of time. Moreover, it should not be used on a repeated basis.

Other ways to help babies going through the teething process is to let them chew on teething rings, frozen waffles or carrot sticks which can help alleviate the discomfort caused by teething.

These simple things will not only assist in getting rid of the discomfort which arises from teething, but it will also help the baby’s tooth to cut through their gum line. Regardless of when your baby starts to teeth, you are now prepared to help provide comfort and relief.

Sleepless nights with your baby can threaten to rob you of the greatfulness you feel to have a wee one in your care. The truth is, if mom and dad are not getting enough sleep on a regular basis, they are going to be cranky and this will effect a few things in daily life.

There are numberous reasons why your baby won’t sleep, understanding this is key to finding a way to work around or even solve your sleepless nights.

Reasons why your Baby won’t sleep:

Lack of or no routine or change up in routine (for example visitors staying in the house, holidays, moving house, starting childcare or a new environment …)

Ignoring tired signs

Over or under stimulated with people or activities

Personality needs: Insecure and in need of contact and reassurance or fear of separation or just plain a snuggly little person

Immunizations

Hungry or Over fed

Just before achieving a new milestone like teething, learning to roll over, crawling…

Sleep associations such as rocking, pacifyer/dummy dependent

Health related issues: allergy and intolerance to substances or foods (direct or via breast milk), unwell or after an illness

Family situations – tensions picked up or a single parent craving a child’s company

One more often overlooked cause for infant sleep difficulties: Weather conditions — Cold/windy/hot/full moon

[affmage source="amazon" results="1"]swaddle[/affmage]

Checking this list may very well help you to discover what actually is hindering your baby from getting a peaceful night’s sleep. You might be surprised to discover that an elementary need can be accomodated and attended to, offering your baby just the missing ingredient to allow you all to have a peaceful night.

Understanding why your baby won’t sleep is a huge step in the right direction and once you have pinpointed the reason, you may work on eliminating this distractions/problems and move on to a good night’s rest.

Learn what causes Diaper Rash, how to prevent it and how to relieve the symptoms.

New parents have a lot of cause to be concerned about their baby’s health. Visiting any website with even just the regular things that can – and do – happen to most babies is enough to drive someone to distraction. Even non-parents would be hard pressed not to shudder in sympathy. Something as common as diaper rash, which affects most babies at some point in some measure, is still too much for any parent to bear with real composure. Knowing how to recognize diaper rash, and prevent it getting worse, is something that all parents will be well served by in the early life of their baby.

The diaper area of a baby will, unavoidably, come into contact with some bacteria on a regular basis. Even regular changes and cleaning can sometimes fail to pick it up. You will know when your baby has diaper rash, as it is characterized by skin in the diaper area appearing red and inflamed, and in some cases coming up in pimples. It will irritate the child and if left unchecked can develop into something worse, including a number of infections. As well as this, it will be obvious to any parent that the child is in quite some discomfort. They will cry more and louder, and show general displeasure. Keeping your baby clean will, however, keep diaper rash from occurring in a severe manner or too often, and swift corrective action including treatment with a gentle, pH neutral moisturizer will make a real difference, quickly.

Quick list on how to prevent diaper rash:

The American Academy of Family Physicians offers these preventive suggestions:

Keep a watchful eye on your baby’s diaper, and change it as soon as possible after it is soiled.

When you change baby’s diaper, clean the infant’s bottom thoroughly with warm water and mild soap.

Pat baby’s skin dry after a bath or diaper change — never scrub it.

Make sure baby’s skin is completely dry before you put on a clean diaper.

Don’t use scented baby wipes, or those that contain alcohol.

Cover baby’s skin with a zinc oxide ointment or petroleum jelly to protect it from wetness.

Avoid diapers with plastic edges, or plastic pants.
