Teletubbies – The Magic Pumpkin and Other Stories

One day in Teletubbyland, something appeared from far away. Boo! It was a magic pumpkin. And that’s not the only seasonal surprise in store for Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, and Po as they discover a pair of boots and the wind takes Dipsy’s hat for a ride! Celebrate Halloween and the Fall with the Teletubbies in this all-new video, only available for a short time!”Wha’s dat?” exclaim the Teletubbies. It’s a pumpkin–a magic pumpkin with facial features that appear and disappear. You can imagine the giggle-provoking chase scene that ensues when the pumpkin obtains Dipsy’s hat! Almost as soon as Dipsy retrieves his hat, it’s blown off by a gust of wind. Luckily, Tinky Winky, Laa-Laa, and Po are ready to lend a helping hand. Then Laa-Laa takes an indoor walk to avoid the rain–watch and laugh as she goes around and around, again and again. There are 3 fall-theme kid segments (shown only once, unlike the TV series) sprinkled throughout the 60-minute video. A young girl decorates a pumpkin with glue, seeds, leaves, straw, and other natural decorations. Then two children prepare and devour an apple pie with some adult assistance, and a group of kids trek through a park to catch leaves as they fall from the trees. In evidence are all the signature Teletubbies touches–gray rabbits, voice trumpets, magic windmills, the baby-face in the sun, and lots of repetition. Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers will smile, laugh, and thoroughly enjoy this fall-theme Teletubby adventure. –Tami Horiuchi

Teletubbies – Here Come the Teletubbies

Over the hills and far away, the Teletubbies come to play! This landmark preschool video is available on DVD for the first time! It is designed to address physical, social and cognitive needs of the very youngest children. On the surface, there’s not a lot to Here Come the Teletubbies: Teletubby playtime in Teletubby Land is interrupted by a brief nap, a break for toast, a glimpse at some children playing in the rain, and Po’s discovery of a puddle. Of course, the Teletubbies are (thankfully) about a lot more than plot devices and story lines. How else you can explain a phenomenon that has everyone from neo-psychedelic ravers to preschool children to educators enthusiastic about the same TV show? The real asset to this video (and, of the Teletubbies’ output, it’s the best) is the way problem solving, language, and even mishaps are presented–devised perfectly to match the mindset of a preschooler. It’s hard not to relate to Po eating custard, making a mess, and then taking a snooze; or Tinky Winky trying to clean up his fellow Tubbies’ mess by grabbing all their toys. Sure, there is a lot of weirdness to these four creatures: the baby’s face in the sun, the computer-generated animal parade that comes out of nowhere, even the snare-drum roll and cymbal crash that accompanies the Tubbies’ every move. But for all its fantasy, it’s highly addictive and just what young children need. –Jason Verlinde

Teletubbies – Silly Songs and Funny Dances

Given the army of 1-year-olds who take their first wobbly dance steps to the Tubbies theme song, it’s high time a program turned the tables on Tinky and the gang getting busy to a beat. Silly Songs and Funny Dances does just that, swooping in on Tubbyland and its flannel-wrapped, rainbow-hued foursome for an hour-long look at Laa-Laa twirling in a tutu, the noisy NuNu wrecking various lovely renditions of “Twinkle Twinkle,” Dipsy and the others delivering ditties dedicated to their favorite things, and tummy-TV segments on a satin-fingered harpist and budding ballerinas. Before it’s time for Tubbie bye-bye, magic mittens get Po and Tinky-Winky grooving on the Tubbie AstroTurf and a big hug or two makes its way into the mix. Guaranteed to trip your toddler’s instinct to get down. –Tammy La Gorce

Teletubbies

“Playful Patterns and Simple Shapes,” the subtitle of this hour-long program, sums up its agenda, with some counting and toddler-specific social lessons thrown in. The first segment takes the Tubbies out of their green-hilled, bunny-laden environment and places them against a series of solid-color backdrops where they multiply, diminish, dance, and giggle. It’s pretty simple, even by Teletubby standards, and will probably only appeal to very young fans. The second and third segments take the colorful foursome back to Teletubbyland where their tubby toast machine malfunctions, spewing out toast at an alarming rate, but resulting in a circular pattern. When a mirror appears on one of their hills, they study their facial features and then relax by examining the clouds, which appear first in conventional shapes but then morph into replicas of their favorite objects, like Tinky Winky’s “bag” (a.k.a. purse). In the tummy-TV segments, real kids ride a carousel and learn to use a camera. (Ages 1 to 4). –Kimberly Heinrichs
