Parents will have plenty of trouble synchronizing their personal sleeping pattern to that of a newly born baby. They will often feel tired and sleepy at a time when the little one seems to be wide awake and in the mood for some playtime. On another occasion, a parent might want to gently nudge or playfully touch the cheeks of the little one at a time when all that is on the little one’s mind is sleep. The truth is, during the first few weeks it can be a nightmare just keeping track of a baby’s sleeping patterns.

Babies will typically sleep in short spells (2-3 hours) and will generally sleep when they are tired. New parents probably wonder why babies often wake up in the night and can’t seem to get sleep. It is simple – they don’t know the difference between night and day. Sleep specialist Dr. Shelly Weiss, recommends that at night, when feeding her baby, a mother should make it quiet and short and should put the baby back to bed in a dark place. During the day feeding should be more fun and lively to give the child the impression that they should be up during the day and sleep during the night.

In the first 3 to 4 months, it is difficult for newborns to put themselves to sleep. There will however be signs that a baby is tired because normally after 10-20 minutes of playtime, which might be just a quiet cuddle or some time stretching out (or even kicking on a blanket), they get tired and want to sleep. Parents need to be on the lookout for signs of wanting to sleep – for instance crying. With time, babies will slowly begin to associate certain activities or processes to sleeping and this will eventually become the routine, but it also takes them a few months before they actually realise that they need rest. Oftentimes a newborn will be fussy because they need sleep, but continually wake themselves just as theyre dropping off.

For instance, it is natural for a newborn to fall asleep while sucking at the breast, a bottle, or a pacifier. The trouble is that when a baby always falls asleep this way, he learns to associate sucking with falling asleep and over time, he cannot fall asleep any other way. This can lead to parents experiencing problems when they try to wean their baby off a pacifier and can lead to thumb sucking in later life, which in turn has been associated with adulthood smoking.

Parents can promote healthy sleep habits by creating sleeping environments and moods for the little ones by rocking them gently, nurturing them or cuddling them to help them fall asleep. After 3 or 4 months its is recommended that parents teach the little ones to learn to fall asleep all by themselves, and this can be achieved by developing a bedtime routine of stories and cuddles is a quiet, dimly lit bedroom.

It is not healthy for new parents to indulge in sleep deprivation like numerous experts might suggest. Instead, sleep when the baby sleeps; something you can easily do if you keep track of the sleeping patterns of the little ones.

Juanita’s Kitchen

In the corner of a tiny kitchen is a hole drilled into the wall; a small marble has worked its way in. A four-year old child sits in the corner of that kitchen; slowly, patiently with his index finger he works at that marble that will not be extricated. But it is the mind of that child that is quietly formulating one of life’s troubling concepts. Nearby, mother methodically kneads and wedges the masa for tortillas being freshly heated on a hot skillet.

The Value Of Power-Napping

Power-napping is a practice that will maximise the benefits of sleep against time. It is a sort of supplement to normal sleep, mostly when one is not getting enough sleep. James Maas, a Social Psychologist at Cornell University came up with the expression ‘power-nap’, a short sleep ending just before the beginning of deep sleep. It is intended to refresh and revitalize someone especially if they are having a sleep deficit.

Bad Breath in Babies and Toddlers

Thumb Sucking

Bad Breath in Babies and Toddlers

If your baby or toddler has had bad breath lately, not to worry. There are plenty of things you can do in order to reduce the risk of bad breath for your little one, and there are ways to tell if your baby’s bad breath is an indication of a more serious condition.

More than likely, your baby or toddler sleeps with his or her mouth open, and this dries the mouth out during the night, which can cause ‘morning breath’. You should make sure that your child is brushing with a good kid-friendly toothpaste, and is rinsing with an effective mouthwash in order to reduce the risk of bad breath. You should also try to stop your baby or toddler from thumb sucking, since this can reduce the saliva production in the mouth and, incidentally, it can alter the formation of their teeth as they erupt out of the gum and grow. A teething ring or pacifier can be a good temporary alternative to thumb sucking, and will help your child’s teeth to grow properly and in line.

If you are brushing your toddler’s teeth daily, and are having him or her rinse with a kid-friendly mouthwash after every brush, you should see an improvement in your little one’s breath soon. However, if the problem persists, it may be an indication that your child may have a more serious condition. For instance, if your baby’s breath smells like baked bread, it can be a sign of typhoid fever, and if your toddler’s breath smells like celery, it could be an indication of Aasthouse urine disease. Garlicky breath could be a sign of arsenic or thallium poisoning, so be sure to pay special attention to the actual scent of your child’s breath to determine the right treatment options. As with any problems with a baby’s health if the smell persists after cleaning take you child to see your doctor or pediatrician.

If you feel that your child should be treated for diseases and conditions that are more serious or ongoing, you should change your child’s diet in order to eliminate toxins from the body. Having your baby or toddler drink water and all-natural juices several times a day will help to clean the body and freshen the breath. You should also have your children eat fresh foods all day, as packaged foods can slow down taking away wastes from the body. You should also consult with your child’s doctor as soon as you can in order to treat your little one’s bad breath permanently.

Jeff Clare writes regularly for Bad Breath Causes And Treatments where you can read many more articles on halitosis treatments. Also go to Halitosis Causes And Treatments for a range of informative articles on bad breath causes and much more

Babies Teething – The bible

Babies Teething – The bible

Babies Teething

The teething stage will start when your baby reaches two months of age. They start to drool and when you notice that they are drooling you should put a bib on them to stop any irritation that would be due to the wetness.

Teething is one of the great milestones of your baby’s development and memories of your baby’s first big toothy grin will be treasured forever. For some children it can be a breeze and they’ll not bat an lid, but for others it can be extremely painful and cause upset for you and your child.

It’s difficult to tell when your baby is cutting a tooth and also how they’ll react, but we hope that the information and advice provided on this website will help to reassure you and ease you both through the teething process.

When your baby is holding a rattle they would also be old enough to grip a teething ring. It is a good idea to have a few in the fridge for when your baby starts to fuss. It is not a very great idea to freeze the teething ring because it could cause the babies gums to be frost bit.

The first teeth will appear around the age of six to nine months. But if you or any of the siblings of your baby has had teeth come out at an earlier age your baby may also. When your baby’s teeth erupt they need to be cleaned. You can clean your baby’s teeth using a washcloth or a soft toothbrush.

It is time to start flossing your baby’s teeth when they have many teeth that have erupted out of the gum. This can also help them fine tune their fine motor skills. There have been studies done by the American Dental Association that have proven that brushing alone will not remove all the food stuck in teeth so flossing also needs to be done. When flossing is not done daily cavities will appear sooner.

You should take your baby to see a denist if they are teething twice per year. Your child should see their dentist when they are able to sit for as long as ten minutes. But this should be done by the time that they turn three.

Like adults, all children can deal with pain in different ways and some will even have an easier time than others. However, most babies with get a little grouchy and irritable!

You will need to look for certain symptoms a few months before the first tooth appears. This is important because all too often, teething gets blamed for a variety of complaints, such as fever, vomiting, runny noses, diarrhoea and rashes all of which could be signs of a different problem. In fact, most healthcare professionals agree that teething should not make your baby ill, so if you’re unsure of the cause of your baby’s discomfort or they are suffering from any of these conditions, you should always consult your doctor.

Question by mike87: i have an old painting my mother called “the land of nod” depicting sleeping babies how can i find the origin?

Best answer:

Answer by Andromeda
Look at the painting and find any features that are interesting – any certain style of the artist (for example, is it realistic or impressionistic, does it look like an illustration, are there lots of straight lines or flowing lines), that would narrow it down for you to go to the library or google or explain to someone about it, is there an artist signature? That would be a LOT more helpful?
Or even a picture? You never know, someone could help?

How To Introduce A Vegan Diet To Your Infant

June 16, 2010 by Dan Walters

If you are going to be putting your infant on a vegetarian diet when they are born, you should choose very carefully the formulas and solids that you will be giving your child.

If you are a vegetarian yourself, and plan on breastfeeding your infant then you may need to add nutritional supplements to your breast milk. A lot depends on your dietary restrictions. Vegan or ovo-vegetarians may need to supplement their child’s diet with Vitamin B-12.

But even if you are a strict Vegetarian you should be able provide all the other important nutrients that your child needs through breastfeeding, apart from Vitamin B-12.

If you do not breastfeed your child, it is better to feed them with a commercial formula feed that contains all the nutrients that they need. Some Soy milk or homemade formula milk may not have the same nutrients as commercial formula milk. This could lead to problems with your child’s development.

If you decide that you want your child on a Vegan diet. There are commercial Soy formula milks that do have the right amount of nutrition in them.

After a year you could use additional products such as Soymilk or yoghurt or other nutritional items to supplement your formula or breast milk.

Some nutritionists say that after one year old a child should really be on a high protein, full fat diet. This includes vegetarian friendly foods such as mashed avocados, Yoghurt, Soy milk and much more.

When your infant is ready to change to solid foods, you could add Vegetarian burgers, solid tofu, eggs and cheese.

By increasing your child’s protein and maintaining a full fat diet, you will be supplementing what a vegetarian diet lacks. Your child should develop as normal whilst still maintaining a healthy vegetarian diet.

This writer additionally often blogs about things like air conditioning rental and cheap air conditioners.

Making Your Home Safe For A New Baby

June 15, 2010 by Ruth Williams

You’ve got a lot on your mind right now if you’ve just had a baby. There’s so much to think about now, and one of the most important things to check off your list is eliminating potential hazards in your home to make it safe for your new addition.

1. In terms of general issues, outlet covers are critical, as are hand rails and safety gates for your stairs. Prepare your pets for the arrival of the new member of the household by bringing home the hospital blanket with the baby’s scent on it and letting your pets get familiar with the smell. Smoke detectors are required outside every bedroom and on each level of your home, and carbon monoxide detectors should be on each floor as well. Also, put bumpers on all tables with sharp edges and remove glass-top tables.

2. As far as the kitchen is concerned, lock up cleaning solutions which may be hazardous, and put locks on lower cabinets and the refrigerator. Make sure that glassware, china, and knives are out of children’s reach. Take extra precautions while cooking, being sure to keep handles of pots and pans away from a child’s grasp, and never to leave the kitchen while cooking.

3. Check the doors and windows of your home to make sure that the locks are not easily manipulated by little hands. Be aware of the fact that cords on window blinds can be deadly, since a child may get caught in them. Be sure to secure these cords well out of the reach of children.

4. The bathroom contains many objects you should keep out of the reach of children, so take a thorough look around to address these issues. A solid toilet seat lid-lock is a necessity now, as is the need to put away harmful items such as hair dryers, curling irons, razors, clippers and scissors. A non-slip mat is needed for your tub, and some parents also install a bathtub handrail for extra security.

5. There was a recent law banning the manufacture and sale of drop-side cribs in May of 2010. Many parents have relied on this style of crib for generations, but they should no longer be used, even if you currently have one in your home. They have been proven to be harmful, and many injuries and fatalities have occurred using this type of crib.

Some things in life are too important to do haphazardly, and preparing your home so that it is safe for your baby is one of them. Getting ready for your child’s homecoming will mean one less thing to worry about, and you can put all of your energy and attention into enjoying this precious time with your new baby.

Ruth Williams writes on nearly every topic you can imagine, including online degree programs and online colleges for working adults.
