Where the Wild Things Are

Question by dixie_girl_00: How would you find Where the Wild Things Are intellectually challenging to a child?
In light of the movie coming out, I decided to read Where the Wild Things Are again. I was just wondering this one question.

Best answer:

Answer by ND DVM
I don’t think it’s meant to be intellectually challenging, rather it’s meant to be entertaining. I’ve seen the movie trailer, but I still can’t fathom how this charming little book can be stretched into a film. Or why.

How to Provide Teething Relief to Your Child

Teething Relief

How to Provide Teething Relief to Your Child

The main symptoms of teeth eruption could give a rough time to the entire family: the baby is crying and refusing to eat and the parents are at the end of their rope because of the lack of sleep and the irritability of the baby. Teething relief does exist and you should not have to pass through all the nasty moments if you manage to recognize the signs that indicate teeth eruption. First of all, babies usually start drooling excessively even a week before other obvious symptoms may appear; drooling is not bothersome for the child and there is no teething relief for it. However, wiping the baby’s face clean as often as possible will reduce the risk of getting a skin rash or an infection.

Then, chewing and biting at things is the next clue that the baby is teething. A hard surface pressed against the gums reduces the soreness and brings temporary comfort to the little one. You can use special rubber toys, rings and even very hard biscuits for teething relief, with the mention that any item you give the child to chew on needs to be perfectly safe and hygienic. A teething ring can be cooled in the fridge beforehand since the cold helps reduce the swelling and the pain in the gums. Such a teething relief method should not be applied to various foods.

Some parents will cool a banana for instance before giving it to the infant or they will offer cold liquids administered with a spoon. Though these methods provide temporary teething relief they are nevertheless risky from other points of view: the child may get a sore throat, a cold or even an infection, particularly since the immune system is weaker during the teeth eruption period. You can however go for special teething granules, gels or foams that have an instant effect and soothe the baby very well.

Gently massaging the gums with a wet cloth or the finger provides teething relief; you could also use a brush for the matter and take advantage of the opportunity to start the education for a healthy oral hygiene. Always wash your hands well before treating the baby, and avoid using pain killers as much as possible. Though such drugs are generally designed in pediatric use formulas, they may not be very well tolerated by the digestive system of the child, and could therefore cause very unpleasant reactions.

Taking Your New Baby Home for the 1st time

February 23, 2010 by Filip Geogian

When you determine these routines from the first day it makes it a lot less complex to get a baby to sleep thru the night and also allows for life to come back to some semblance of normalcy a ton more fast.

Bringing your baby home from the infirmary will probably be one of the more notable day of your life. So long as you have the data you need, bringing your new baby home will be nothing aside from joyous and outstanding. They look good, smell good, and they make us feel good when we look at them. Naturally, this is usually the stuff we think about babies before we bring our own home.

A nurse will most often escort you to your vehicle and help you if you need help properly strapping your baby in. This is a comparatively new rule, so just be sure to have an additional outfit and a blanket or two in your bags you pack for your infirmary stay.

The baby in the first quarter sleeps a lot, he is going to be particularly chuffed in a cradle as it’s going to be just his / her size, he / she won’t feel lost. The perfect is to borrow one from a family member or a chum because they will be able to be pricey, and you may only use it a particularly brief period of time.

While the surgery will provide the must haves like formula and diapers, you won’t be permitted to keep the t-shirts they put your baby in, nor will you be permitted to take the baby blankets. This is a relatively new rule, so just be certain to have an extra outfit and a blanket or 2 in your bags you pack for your hospital stay.

Consider having both dad and mum take at least a couple of days off work. It can be actually helpful to have both mother and pa at home for one or two days until a routine can be developed.

A bassinet makes this possible without having to find additional room to fit in a crib. If you’ve a bassinet, your baby can sleep easily in your room till you are prepared for the baby to sleep in the nursery in his crib.

Most Importantly, relax! Enjoy all the time you have with your newborn as they go by so quickly. Children have done just fine for 1000s of years without all the stuff we have these days, so don’t worry if you don’t think things are perfect. Stuff doesn’t make life perfect, the time you spend with your infant is the thing that really matters most.

Why does my child suck their thumb or finger

Why does my child suck their thumb or finger

You’re Not Alone

Thumb sucking is one of the most common habits during childhood. Most children suck their thumb for safety even before birth. Roughly one out of every three children, ages 1 to 4, will suck his or her thumb at least sometimes. About one in five children will still be doing so at the age of 5 or older. The habit is typically harmless if the child does it occasionally, but thumb sucking is one of the most difficult habits to break.

Why It Happens?

According to the American Dental Association, Children suck on things because sucking is one of a baby’s natural reflexes and as infants get older it serves them many purposes. It may make them feel secure and happy and it also helps them learn about their world by sucking on their fingers, thumbs and other objects. Young children may also suck to soothe themselves. Since thumb sucking is relaxing, it may help induce sleep.

Children should have stopped sucking their thumbs by the time the permanent front teeth are ready to erupt. Most children usually stop thumb sucking between the ages of 2 and 4.

About fifteen percent of children will continue thumb sucking past their fifth birthday. This is an age when teasing often starts, causing social difficulties for children once they reach school age.

What Causes Thumb Sucking In An Older Child?

Some children are more nervous, shy , or insecure than others, and may use thumb sucking to relieve tension. Others may resort to thumb sucking to alleviate boredom or maybe when they’re tired or upset. They may also use his thumb to fall asleep at bedtime and to lull themselves back to slumber when woken up in the middle of the night. Sometimes parents unwittingly prolong the habit by getting into power struggles with their child in an attempt to stop thumb sucking.

The good news is that while thumb sucking is common in toddlers and younger children (about half of all children do it at some time or another), it tends to disappear by age two or three, except in those few children who become fixated. Nelson\’s Textbook of Pediatrics gives the incidence by age 5 of 10% of children.

When Should I Suspect My Child Has A Thumb Sucking Problem?

For the child under two, thumb sucking is rarely, if ever, considered a problem, and it may help to alleviate the child\’s stress or tension. But older children who suck their thumb or finger chronically may need guidance from parents because the chronic sucking habit can cause the child\’s permanent teeth to become crooked.

“The kids you worry about are the ones who suck their fingers while watching TV and while they\’re in the car and while they sleep and oftentimes, during school. These children can develop dental problems,” one dentist states.

Now is the time to deal with the problem, which if persistent, can interfere with tooth eruption and position, create speech issues, affect the growth and development of jaws, and perpetuate abnormal swallow patterns.

How To Help Your Child Achieve The Best Dental Health

May 8, 2008 by BabyCare

“Thum stops thumb sucking nail biting”

I’ve never seen or heard of this product before. It appears to be a foul-tasting substance that you paint on your child’s hand. I found the kinda-retro-looking package design fascinating.

How To Help Your Child Achieve The Best Dental Health

Dental care should start early for your little one. In fact, it’s recommended that children see a dentist after the first six months of age, and at least by the child’s first birthday. By this time a baby’s first teeth are beginning to erupt, and it’s a critical time to detect any dental problems before they become major concerns.

Good dental care and healthy eating habits are just a few important factors that play a large role in the development of strong, healthy teeth for your child. Teach proper dental habits early, and your child will be better equipped to care for their smile into adulthood.

Preventing Tooth Decay

In order to prevent tooth decay from building on your child’s teeth, it’s important to practice good dental health every day, including proper brushing, flossing and eating a well-balanced diet. When your child’s first tooth erupts, you should clean the tooth with a soft damp cloth. As more teeth appear, use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean the teeth and gums. By the age of six, introduce your child to brushing and flossing on their own. Brush twice a day to prevent plaque build up, and purchase bright, fun colored toothbrushes and flavorful toothpaste to make brushing fun.

Limit the amount of sugary foods and drinks your child consumes, as large doses can lead to tooth decay and cavities. Instead, introduce fruits and vegetables into your child’s diet to encourage healthy eating. Promoting a nutritious and well-balanced diet with the recommended levels of calcium and fluoride can help your child build strong, decay-resistant teeth.

Prepare For Dental Injuries

Unfortunately, injuries to the teeth and mouth do occur, especially when you have an active child. As always, the first step to handling your child’s dental emergency is to contact your dentist, as it may be necessary for your child to receive professional dental care if the injury is serious. Knowing how to handle dental emergencies can make dental emergencies less stressful. Ask your child’s dentist how to care for lost, chipped or broken teeth.

To reduce the chance of dental injuries, don’t allow your child to put foreign objects or toys into their mouth as this can damage their teeth. And if your child is involved in impact sports and physical activities, ask your dentist about custom-fit mouth guards to prevent injuries to the mouth, teeth, lips and gums.

Thumb-sucking and Pacifiers

If your child sucks their thumb or seems attached to their pacifier, don’t be alarmed. It’s normal for a child to suck on a pacifier or thumb at some point. This behavior is soothing and comforting for the child, and provides a feeling of security and relaxation. But as the child grows older, usually around the age of four, try to discourage the use of pacifiers and thumb-sucking. Excessive and prolonged thumb-sucking can interfere with the development of your child’s teeth, causing them to be malformed, crooked or crowded. Ask your dentist about effective methods for weaning your child off of these behaviors.

Helping your child achieve a beautiful, healthy smile doesn’t have to be difficult. Choose a dentist that is comfortable with children, and one that provides a relaxing and educational atmosphere for your child.

Should I care if my child sucks their thumb or finger

Thumb sucking is one of the most common habits during childhood. Most children suck their thumb for safety even before birth. Roughly one out of every three children, ages 1 to 4, will suck his or her thumb at least sometimes. About one in five children will still be doing so at the age of 5 or older and may need guidance from parents because the chronic sucking habit can cause the child\’s permanent teeth to become crooked.

According to ADA, after the permanent teeth come in, thumb sucking may cause problems with the proper growth of the mouth and alignment of the teeth. It can also cause changes in the roof of the mouth. The intensity of the sucking is a factor that determines whether or not dental problems may result. If children rest their thumbs passively in their mouths, they are less likely to have difficulty than those who vigorously suck their thumbs. Some aggressive thumb-suckers may cause problems with their baby (primary) teeth.

When It Becomes A Problem

? Facial changes – if thumb-sucking persists, changes in the face may occur.

? Buck teeth – for example, the front teeth may be pushed out of alignment. This can alter the shape of the face and lead to an open/over bite.

? A lisp – pre-school children who suck their fingers and thumbs can push their teeth out of their normal position. This interferes with the correct formation of certain speech sounds.

? A child who is still sucking his thumb by age five, when permanent teeth start coming in, may develop an abnormal bite.

? The child may get teased by peers, when this happens it’s not uncommon for the child to have challenges with self-esteem.

? Prolonged thumb sucking can cause minor physical problems, such as chapped lips or cracked skin, calluses, or fingernail infections.

? Although thumb sucking is a normal habit it can cause serious teeth problems if it continues after teeth eruption.

? The problem gets serious if it continues after the age of four, when the permanent teeth are about to appear.

? In some cases thumb sucking is substituted by another dangerous habit as placing pencils between the teeth or biting the lips.

? If the child doesn\’t stop sucking their thumb in time, it is possible some teeth to get misplaced and require orthodontal treatment.

At age three, some children can comprehend a reward system and be motivated to stop sucking their thumb. If a child is four and is still sucking his thumb and is having difficulty stopping, parents ought to think about what they can do to help.
