Question by Brenda: What is colic and how do you know if a baby has it instead of something else?
My grandbaby is upset and crying tonight. He and his mother are saying she’s colicky. But she’s also recently had an ear infection and a mild case of pheumonia. In the last 2-3 days she’s been vomiting up phelgm and has had diarhea. Not tempatures yet. I’m not sure of what “Colic” is, but it seems to me that it’s more than that. Any thoughts?

Best answer:

Answer by luisa_mapacha
“Colic” just means the baby cries a lot for no reason. It’s code for “we don’t know what’s wrong.” It is not a disease or illness with any specific symptoms.

Either way, you have a VERY sick baby on your hands. She needs to see a doctor ASAP.

Baby Colic Has No Steadfast Cure

All parents pass through a tedious period when their baby experiences baby colic. Baby or infant colic is a condition where you may find a perfectly healthy baby crying for no reason at all. Sometimes screaming also accompanies this crying and this situation is common amongst babies who are a few months old. At the age of eight months, the child may stop experiencing baby colic.

Colic is more common in the bottle fed baby, however, this does not imply that it is not seen in breast fed babies. There are cases of breast fed babies also experiencing baby colic and bouts generally occur during a specific part of the day, mostly early evening.

The cause has not been proven yet. It is found that the amount of colic in babies tend to differ from one to the other. Babies are generally considered to be suffering from baby colic even if, after all its causes have been ruled out, the baby keeps crying for hours daily, more than 3 days a week, throughout the month.

Colic was first assumed to be abdominal pain that developed with trapped gas in the digestive tract. However, it is no longer considered to be the only cause. Some doctors conclude that the baby’s delicate nature, its developing nervous system, and the new and harsh environment it lives in all generally lead to baby colic. A condition called mild gastro esophageal reflux has also been linked to it. Sometimes, babies suffering from lactose intolerance may also suffer and circadian rhythms’ effects, smoking of the mother and smoke in the air, along with existence of too much stress in the pregnant mother during the third trimester of pregnancy have all been found to be associated with baby colic.

There has never been any fixed medical treatment. The treatment of baby colic differs between medical practitioners and physicians of different countries. In fact, there are some physicians who advise the baby to be left alone, and let the baby colic run its course, as there is no actual cure for baby colic. Some doctors today advise simethicone to treat baby colic; this is effective in some cases, and not in others.

Allergies in the baby and mother have now been proven to be the major cause, so it is often advised to control the diet of the breastfeeding mother. This move has in fact produced amazing results. However, it does not necessarily cure it. Soothing measures like pacifiers and rocking have found to be rather effective in calming the baby during bad bouts. Parents generally try all types of methods to cure baby colic. If you have tried several ways, but still not able to solve the issue fully, don’t feel disappointed. Baby colic will last only a few months.

Question by jlb: What do you consider “colic” to mean?
I have noticed that people use “colic” to describe a wide variety of problems with babies. I was always under the impression that colic was characterized as inconsolable crying for long periods of time (3hrs a day or more) in babies 3 months and younger. It seems like a lot of people consider a “colicy baby” to be a gassy or fussy baby.

What is your definition of colic?

Best answer:

Answer by Ethel
Colic is defined by the rule of threes, three or more hours of crying 3 or more times a week for three weeks. Most people think that it’s due to gas (they are completely wrong and has more to do with the child’s temperament).

Get Information on Baby Colic

If your baby has colic you’ve probably been on a search for baby colic remedies. Colic is one of those things that some parents unfortunately just have to deal with. Watching your small baby struggle with gas pain is never fun, so anything you can do to offer the baby some relief is going to be welcomed. You actually don’t have to look very far to find someone who has a colic cure they swear worked well for their child.

Natural remedies for colic include bryonia alba, colocynths, chamomile, magnesia phosphoric, pulsatilla, and many others. The different homeopathic solutions to colic are suitable for a whole range of colic symptoms. However, it is important to have a homoeopathist evaluate your baby for the best homeopathic or natural remedy for the individual colic. For some time many individuals were wary of natural medicine, however given the many positive experiences people have had in addition to few side effects like traditional medicine more and more individuals are turning to this natural medicine and even their babies as well.

Another medical theory relates infant colic to the lactating mother who may be consuming foods that contain unsafe chemicals that trigger off allergies and digestive tract problems in the baby, resulting in colicky episodes. These food elements that may be responsible for causing bloating, gas etc are typically varieties of cruciferous vegetables and other gas-producing products that are passed on to the infant through breast-milk; besides, babies often swallow air when they are being nursed or even when they cry, which further adds to the problem.

Baby colic can appear without a warning causing the baby to cry out in pain and then it will just disappear almost as soon as it appeared. The best treatment for baby colic is believed to be gripe water. Mothers can also hold the baby upright to her body to relieve the infant from the pain to an extent. It is believed that the soothing warmth from the mother’s body soothes the infant’s abdomen where the pain is concentrated.

Colic usually occurs in the evening and some infants have a specific time of the day when they will experience colic pain, typically after a meal, so parents need to be alert to these kinds of episodes and wait again to see if it will recur. Many a time it can be due to gas in the stomach that makes a baby cry for long till it is released (usually by rubbing on the tummy or holding the baby upright and burping the infant). Most babies that have this problem will find relief on passing bowels and releasing the gas towards the end of the job!

Once colic has been diagnosed you should try to identify the cause. If you are breastfeeding avoid foods that are likely to cause gas. Make a note of what you are eating; baby may be intolerant to something in your diet, including dairy products. If the baby is bottle fed your doctor may suggest a change of formula. Don’t overfeed the baby, we all know that bloated feeling when we have overeaten, so why shouldn’t baby feel the same. Try hard not to get stressed, I know this isn’t easy but many experts believe that babies are sensitive to stress around them and react.

Question by Rachelle K: Please, what are some things that I can do to help soothe a baby with colic problems??
My son is having terrible problems with crying due to colic. Yesterday he literally cried hysterically for two hours straight. I don’t mind his regular cry, but he was practically screaming

I took him to the ER just to make certain everything was okay and after a check up and running some labs they told me there wasn’t anything technically wrong with him, just a fussy, colic baby.

I’ve had no experience with this, as my first child was never remotely fussy. Especially not to this extreme. It’s SCARY when my newborn cries like this. It doesn’t seem normal. It also upsets my first son (who is two), because he thinks his brother is hurt.

Please, does anyone have ANY advice for soothing a baby with “colic”? From what I know, that’s kind of a vauge term anyway so I don’t really know where to start. I’m very upset about this, we live a far distance from any family and plus my husband will be gone until June for business. I’m all by myself and I can’t seem to calm him. Please help.

Best answer:

Answer by TCM
I found that the noise of the vacuum calmed my crying baby when everything else failed. Try that. Plus you get some cleaning done!

In order to determine if you baby is colicky, you must understand if your baby's crying is due to circumstances which require immediate medical attention or not. This article will show you the typical colicky baby symptoms

Since there are so many different theories on colic, and because there is no clear cause for colic, it is more helpful to describe what we do know and what colic refers to. Here is a guideline to show you how to tell if your baby has colic.

Doctors diagnose a baby as ‘colicky’ when the baby cries for hours at a time, and there is no clear reason for it. The definition of colic is crying for at least three hours a day, at least three times a week, and for at least three weeks straight.

Babies who have colic are between three weeks and three months old, and it is usually at its worst point when the baby is between 8 and 14 weeks old.

Babies with colic are otherwise healthy and doctors cannot find a medical reason for the crying. The baby is not in pain or hungry, and colic does not cause fever, diarrhea, vomiting, or blood in the stool.

TIP: This means that if you suspect your baby has colic, but he or she is showing these symptoms, you should check with a doctor immediately because there could be other reasons for the crying.

Colicky babies do show some typical behaviors when they cry: some will arch their back and tighten their stomach. They also clench their fists and pull up their legs or stiffen their legs.

If your baby is crying a lot, and you cannot find a reason for it, you might want to keep track of the times and duration of the crying to discuss it with your doctor. The doctor will do a physical exam, and ask you some questions to rule out any other causes for the crying.

Once you know it is colic, there are different approaches you can try that might help you.

Babies cry when they are hungry, when they are tired, and when they are scared. But sometimes, some babies cry because they have colic.

So what is colic–or what are indications of colic?

a loud, constant and continuous cry for hours for no obvious reason. Babies who have colic tend to cry even after being fed and changed.

out-of-the-ordinary things that your baby does while crying: face turning red and staying that way, tightening her hands into a fist and legs constantly kicking. If your baby typically doesn’t act this way when she is hungry or needs to be changed, your baby could have colic.

when your baby to be unable to sleep or eat because he cannot stop crying

Picking the baby up, and other normal comforting techniques do not seem to help as much with colicky babies, and this causes parents to worry and visit their doctor.

When the doctor cannot find a medical cause for the crying, and the baby is not hurt or hungry when he cries, then he or she is diagnosed with colic.

We don’t know yet what causes colic, but some think it has something to do with an immature nervous system or sensitive temperament of the baby. Others think it is related to the baby’s digestive system.

In particular, some doctors think the baby cries because of tummy cramps and gas buildup. This theory has not been proven, but is also not discredited.

Some cases of colic are associated with lactose intolerance, or a lack of probiotic bacteria in the baby’s gut. Eventually, babies do grow out of it, usually when they are about four months old.
