Make Way for Ducklings (Book and Audiocassette Tape) (Paperback)
Make Way for Ducklings (Book and Audiocassette Tape) (Paperback)
It’s not easy for duck parents to find a safe place to bring up their ducklings, but during a rest stop in Boston’s Public Garden, Mr. and Mrs. Mallard think they just might have found the perfect spot–no foxes or turtles in sight, plenty of peanuts from pleasant passers-by, and the benevolent instincts of a kindly police officer to boot. Young readers will love the mother duck’s proud, loving protection of her wee webbed ones, and those with fond memories of Boston will enjoy familiar locales, from Beacon Hill to Louisburg Square, and over the Charles River–often from a duck’s-eye view. Robert McCloskey, creator of Blueberries for Sal, never fails to elicit happy story-time giggles from youngsters, and his soft, brown-toned, Caldecott-winning illustrations make this gentle world come alive.

Q&A: How to convince my parents to let me keep ducklings?
Question by Sarah: How to convince my parents to let me keep ducklings?
I am hatching 3 duck eggs and if they hatch we were going to give them back to the farm but they don’t want the ducks back so they said they would find a home for them, someone who wants them. It makes me really sad now to know someone else will have them. Is there any way I can convince my parents?
I have a REALLY BIG backyard and i have 2 rats and 2 dogs!

First of all, you must have responsibility, they must trust you and that you will look after these ducklings, no matter what the circumstances. Secondly, you need to think outside the box. HOW will you care for them? WHAT do they need to live? Do you have a lake or pond they could swim in? Search on the internet and show your parents all the research you did, maybe they might let you keep the creatures.

Why would a male swan be agressive towards a female duck and her ducklings?
Question by freshlifelove: Why would a male swan be agressive towards a female duck and her ducklings?
I went to a lake today and saw a beautiful swan.
Nearby was a small black bird in the water with a red bill, with 3 babies.
The swan was oblivious to them being there.
But then a mother duck and about 8 ducklings swam towards us and the swan swam towards them in a threatening way making them stay by the river bank. Whenever they advanced to the middle of the lake the swan would swim quickly towards them to force them back.
The ducklings and mother then started swimming to the other side of the lake and the swan swam towards them really agressively. It really looked like it was going to try and kill one of the ducklings.
I threw pebbles to distract it and only when one hit it lightly on the tail did it retreat and go in the opposite direction. I really was concerned for the safety of the ducklings.
Then having walked around the lake I saw another swan, but it was sitting on a massive nest, obviously the other swans partner.
I was completely puzzled why the swan would act like that towards the ducklings.
Does anyone know why this may have been?

Blueberries for Sal [UNABRIDGED] (Audio CD)
One summer day, young Sal and her mother climb Blueberry Hill to pick berries from the many bushes growing there. As her mother fills the pail, Sal fills her tummy with the juicy blueberries. On the other side of the hill, a mother bear and her cub are enjoying the berries, too. Both Sal and the bear cub get tired, though. And when they stop to rest, their mothers keep climbing the hill. The resulting mixup is an adventure that highlights the universal curiosity of children – and the eternal patience of moms. Ever since it was published over 50 years ago, this timeless story has been a beloved favorite of children and their parents. Narrator Christina Moores gentle performance adds a special glow to the charming world McCloskey creates in Blueberries for Sal.

“The adventures of a little girl and a baby bear while hunting for blueberries with their mothers one bright summer day. All the color and flavor of the sea and pine-covered Maine countryside.”–School Library Journal, starred review. Caldecott Honor Book. Full-color illustrations.Kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk go the blueberries into the pail of a little girl named Sal who–try as she might–just can’t seem to pick as fast as she eats. Robert McCloskey’s classic is a magical tale of the irrepressible curiosity–not to mention appetite–of youth. Sal and her mother set off in search of blueberries for the winter at the same time as a mother bear and her cub. A quiet comedy of errors ensues when the young ones wander off and absentmindedly trail the wrong mothers.
Blueberries for Sal–with its gentle animals, funny noises, and youthful spirit of adventure–is perfect for reading aloud. The endearing illustrations, rendered in dark, blueberry-stain blue, will leave you craving a fresh pail of your own. (Picture book)
