There are a number of problems that affect the oral health of children, including tooth decay, thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, lip sucking, and early tooth loss. Even though baby teeth are eventually replaced with permanent teeth, keeping baby teeth healthy is important to a child’s overall health and well-being.

Causes for oral health problems in children

1.    Vitamin deficiency

2.    Fungal infection

3.    Viral infection

4.    Congenital conditions

5.    Child abuse

6.    Bacterial infection

7.    Anti anxiety

8.    Decongestants

Prevention for oral health problems in children

1.    Add sugar to your child’s food is mostly avoided.

2.    A bottle filled with sugary liquids put your baby is avoided.

3.    Do not give cold, hot as well as sweeter food to your children.

4.    Give acidic foods to your children is avoided.

5.    Do not give sticky foods to your child.

Baby bottle tooth decay

Baby bottle tooth decay (also called early childhood caries, nursing caries, and nursing bottle syndrome) occurs when a baby’s teeth are in frequent contact with sugars from liquid carbohydrates, such as fruit juices, milk, formula, fruit juice diluted with water, sugar water or any other sweet drink. Human breast milk can cause tooth decay as well. As these liquids break down in the mouth into simple sugars and are allowed to sit in the mouth, bacteria start feeding on the sugars, causing tooth decay.

If left untreated, decayed teeth can cause pain and make it difficult to chew and eat. Also, baby teeth serve as “space savers” for adult teeth. If baby teeth are damaged or destroyed, they can’t help guide permanent teeth into their proper position, possibly resulting in crowded or crooked permanent teeth. Badly decayed baby teeth could lead to an abscessed tooth, with the possibility of infection spreading elsewhere.

How do I prevent baby bottle tooth decay?

Some tips to prevent baby bottle tooth decay include:

1.    During the day, to calm or comfort your baby, don’t give a bottle filled with sugary liquids or milk; instead, give plain water or substitute a pacifier.

2.    At anytime, don’t dip your baby’s pacifier in sugar, honey, or any sugary liquid.

3.    At bedtime, don’t put your baby to bed with a bottle filled with sugary liquids (watered-down fruit juice or milk still increases the risk of decay). Give plain water.

4.    Don’t add sugar to your child’s food

5.    Use a wet cloth or gauze to wipe your child’s teeth and gums after each feeding. This helps remove any bacteria-forming plaque and excess sugar that have built up on the teeth and gums.

6.    Ask your dentist about your baby’s fluoride needs. If your drinking water is not fluoridated, fluoride supplements or fluoride treatments may be needed.

Tips for oral health problems in children

1.    A bottle filled with plain water give your baby.

2.    A visit to your dentist is regular for your child’s teeth.

3.    You can give a lot of nutritional as well as healthy vegetables and fruits to your children.

4.    Brush your child’s teeth by using fluoride toothpaste.

5.    Change your child toothbrush after every 3-4 months is most important.

6.    In your child’s meal give a minimum snacks.

7.    You can give fluoridated water to your child’s.

How To Introduce A Vegan Diet To Your Infant

June 16, 2010 by Dan Walters

If you are going to be putting your infant on a vegetarian diet when they are born, you should choose very carefully the formulas and solids that you will be giving your child.

If you are a vegetarian yourself, and plan on breastfeeding your infant then you may need to add nutritional supplements to your breast milk. A lot depends on your dietary restrictions. Vegan or ovo-vegetarians may need to supplement their child’s diet with Vitamin B-12.

But even if you are a strict Vegetarian you should be able provide all the other important nutrients that your child needs through breastfeeding, apart from Vitamin B-12.

If you do not breastfeed your child, it is better to feed them with a commercial formula feed that contains all the nutrients that they need. Some Soy milk or homemade formula milk may not have the same nutrients as commercial formula milk. This could lead to problems with your child’s development.

If you decide that you want your child on a Vegan diet. There are commercial Soy formula milks that do have the right amount of nutrition in them.

After a year you could use additional products such as Soymilk or yoghurt or other nutritional items to supplement your formula or breast milk.

Some nutritionists say that after one year old a child should really be on a high protein, full fat diet. This includes vegetarian friendly foods such as mashed avocados, Yoghurt, Soy milk and much more.

When your infant is ready to change to solid foods, you could add Vegetarian burgers, solid tofu, eggs and cheese.

By increasing your child’s protein and maintaining a full fat diet, you will be supplementing what a vegetarian diet lacks. Your child should develop as normal whilst still maintaining a healthy vegetarian diet.

How To Focus On Shedding Weight After Having A Baby

June 7, 2010 by Anna Wallice

Many of us have difficulty losing the weight that has crept up over the past years. Weight loss after having a baby can be even more challenging to take off.

It helps to be patient with the process and stay motivated. Remember that you gained the weight for a reason and it will eventually come off if you stick with it. Most weight loss that stays off happens slowly.

Why not set short term goals as you progress on your weight loss journey? Try taking it a week at a time. For example, tell yourself for that week you will have no treats or walk everyday.

By setting short term goals it makes the finish line seem closer. You will be encouraged by these little victories and have the motivation to continue. It also helps to have a visual image of why you want to change your body. A picture of yourself at a smaller size or a dress you would like to fit in are two suggestions.

It’s a good idea to keep those visuals somewhere were you can see them regularly. Many people don’t accomplish their goals because they don’t write them down or have complete visual image of them. Don’t be one of them. Hold yourself accountable by visualizing your goals.

Don’t fall into the trap of using your pregnancy as an excuse not to take losing the weight seriously. Many women have babies and are able to drop the weight they’ve gained.

It helps to think about the overall impact weight loss will have on your health. Being at a healthy weight will make you feel good, give you confidence and help you avoid health problems.

Try thinking about food purely as nourishment and don’t eat when you’re not hungry. A lot of foods are healthy and low in calories. Try eating fruit when you’re craving something sweet.

Now that you’re baby has arrived you will want to spend as much time with him or her as you can. Lose the weight, get healthy and you will be there for your baby as long as possible.

How Much Time Should A Baby Spend Watching Television?

June 6, 2010 by Gerry Thomas

Television has become ubiquitous in homes all around the world and the average number of hours viewed each day has gone up tremendously. With so many hours spent on television, it’s clear that very young babies are also watching more television. However, there’s a serious question about how healthy television is for babies.

Despite the fact that many experts have stated that any television at all is unhealthy for babies, millions of infants are exposed to television every day. There are a tremendous number of television shows and movies targeted toward babies.

The huge market for television shows for babies was only brought about because of the demand for it. Parents quickly realized that babies enjoy television and that they can become engrossed in it. The question still remains though: how much TV should a baby be allowed to view before it’s considered unhealthy?

While the amount of time a baby spends watching television is important, we should also consider the type of programming. Cartoons and other shows with no educational value should be avoided. They don’t offer anything intellectually stimulating for babies.

Fortunately, there are also educational videos for babies. These are much safer and can actually teach knowledge and skills that will be useful as the baby grows up. Some of these educational programs teach babies to read, speak different languages, or recognize sign language.

Parents of children under two years of age can breathe safe with their babies watching TV. There is no proof to suggest that television does harm to these babies, as long as the programs are educational and the viewing time is kept under control.

Television should never be considered a replacement for the education that a baby receives from interacting with his or her parents, but it can certainly be helpful when you need some time to accomplish tasks that require the baby to behave. Thanks to educational programming, babies can still expand their minds while their parents do chores around the house.

Of course, a baby’s exposure TV should always be carefully monitored. Babies should watch no more than an hour of television in a day, with this time preferably split up between two half-hour segments.

When babies do see ill effects from watching TV, it’s because they were allowed to watch it for entirely too long. Be responsible about your child’s TV viewing and it can be beneficial to both of you.

Tips For Mothers On How To Increase Milk Supply

June 4, 2010 by Sheila Goodman

Just about every breastfeeding mother will have a period of worrying about whether her milk supply is sufficient to meet her infant’s needs. Now, some mothers have reason to worry and aren’t producing enough milk for their babies. This is actually very rare, according to many experts.

Many women who think their milk supply is low are simply incorrect about that. They may think this because of some of the previous symptoms of fullness disappearing. Maybe their milk stops leaking, or they don’t have a feeling of fullness in the breasts any more.

There are other causes for a lack of feeling of fullness, however. One major thing to remember is that babies have growth spurts. When they have these growth spurts, they often eat more than normal. Because of this, the mother’s breasts will not fill to extreme fullness while the babies are eating that much.

Causes of reduced production: Your milk supply may diminish temporarily for several reasons. One common cause is not feeding the baby frequently enough. This is often due to pain in the nipples while nursing, or to a poor latch technique by the baby. Illness can also make a woman’s milk supply dip, as can taking birth control pills with estrogen in them.

How to fix the situation. First, you need to determine that your baby is getting enough food. Make sure your baby is feeding frequently. Your next step is to check with your doctor to see if there are problems with your nipples or milk ducts. Your doctor can run all of the necessary tests to ensure that any complications or issues are diagnosed and properly treated.

This is especially critical if your baby stops gaining weight, or even starts losing weight. If that occurs, contact your doctor right away. If you are not imagining the drop in milk but are actually experiencing a drop in production, it can affect your baby.

Generally, you’ll get instructions for better breast feeding technique and this will help a lot. In some cases there will be bigger problems, as indicated by baby’s weight fluctuations.

Generally, even if you do have a drop in milk supply you can still nurse. Frequent breast feeding will actually remedy the problem most of the time.

Pregnancy Insights – Are You Actually Expecting A Baby Or Have You Been Perhaps Mistaken?

June 4, 2010 by Kenny Johnson

With many of the physical conditions and symptoms of pregnancy present, and a strong belief she is actually pregnant, a woman of childbearing age may experience the strange phenomenon of pseudocyesis, more commonly called pseudo-pregnancy.

The woman may experience such pregnancy symptoms as morning sickness, tender breasts, and the cessation of her period, and may even see her abdomen widen in the case of a false pregnancy.

It is easy to not keep proper track of your menstrual cycles and believe you have missed a period when you haven’t, but in this condition a missed period is often the first and most common symptom. Other influences which might bring on a false pregnancy are an actual fear of getting pregnant or a strong desire to become pregnant, both of which can bring on stress.

When the breasts become tender to the touch, you could be getting your period; however, a female with psuedocyesis is going to think this discomfort is due to being pregnant. Nausea and vomiting are typically the result of hormones being out of balance, which can also lead to your period being late, but mostly, they are indicative of the first trimester of pregnancy.

Certain females who go through a pseudo-pregnancy, might even see their stomach region get bigger. However, this increase in size is probably a result of eating too much because she thinks she is pregnant, of retaining excess water in advance of a period, or the accumulation of gas because of extreme anxiousness and stress.

Pseudocyesis happens most often to females who have miscarried or have had a child die. Older females in their 30’s and 40’s are more typically the victims of pseudo-pregnancies because they are not conceiving as they wish, or they are experiencing issues with infertility. Researchers believe that emotional trauma is usually the main cause of pseudo-pregnancies.

The hormonal balance is directly affected when a woman has an overwhelming desire to become pregnant or a consuming fear of becoming pregnant. The stress caused by these emotional conditions can change the menses of a woman.

If you want to find out for sure whether or not you are pregnant so you can be free from stress, take a pregnancy test in your home. Even better, talk to your OBGYN doctor to determine exactly what is going on with your body as you experience these symptoms.

Getting Pregnant The Natural Way

June 1, 2010 by Philip Walters

Have you been through a number of different kinds of infertility treatments? It can be hard to hold out hope when you’ve had injections, and fertility drugs, and all that. Don’t give up hope though. Most people overcome infertility through natural methods. This has positives and negatives.

The good thing about this is that natural remedies for infertility are just plain safer. They are healthier for you and for your future baby both. You’ll have a healthier pregnancy because the remedies will detoxify your body from all of the drugs from the earlier infertility treatments. You also will like how effective the treatments are.

There is a down side to natural remedies, though. Finding the right one and getting the regimen going is quite time consuming. Plus, you are going to have all of the cost of the treatment. Insurance will often cover traditional infertility treatments, but not natural infertility remedies. If you do an Internet search for natural infertility remedies, you will find hundreds of different natural and organic options including powders and drinks and shakes and so on. Even though these are all natural, the problem is that many of them just don’t work.

How do you sort through the huge volume of remedies to find the one for you?

The easiest way to do this is to find a professional to help you. The right infertility professional can help you determine which of the various methods are the best fit for you. The Ins And Outs Of Being A New Mother

Parenthood is a great joy to many but there are some things people neglect to tell you before having a child that may be helpful to know. It helps to be prepared when the new baby makes his or her arrival.

When you’re baby is born don’t be surprised if it doesn’t look like the Gerber baby you’ve seen on television and in ads. It’s quite common for newborns to look odd, even strange to new parents. Their heads can be misshapen due to the trauma of childbirth. Their skin could look blue or grayish. Newborns often look like little old men and women because they tend to be wrinkly and reddish.

That’s not all. Newborns are usually bloody and can be bruised from the experience. They may be covered in body hair, especially if they are premature. This can be a shocking sight if no one’s ever mentioned it before.

If this is the case, don’t worry. In most cases they aren’t permanent conditions. In just a short while their skin becomes healthy and their heads become round. Babies recover pretty quickly and turn into the beautiful, sweet babies we have come to expect.

Be prepared for that process to take a few weeks, however. Your baby needs time to recover from the trauma of being born.

Once your new baby is born you must be prepared to make a choice about how you will be feeding him or her. The evidence in favor of breast feeding newborns is overwhelming. Most believe it is the best you could do for your child.

Breast feeding naturally contains all the nutrients and vitamins a baby needs. It is a better alternative than formula which has to be added to water, which can contain chemicals unnecessary or even harmful to your baby.

Babies benefit from breast feeding more than you know. Not only do they gain the best possible nourishment from the milk, they also bond with their mother with touch of their skin. Breast feeding provides an opportunity for closeness that can not be replicated.
