Classical Kids Presents: Daydreams and Lullabies (HDCD Master)

(HDCD Master) This is the audiophile version of a classic children’s title. The Studio Arts Orchestra is joined here by vocal soloists and children choir on this CD.

The award-winning Classical Kids series introduces children — and adults — to the joys of classical music. A dramatic story, a little bit of history and the world’s best-loved classical music set the scene for these fun-filled musical adventures.

A celebration of poetry, song and classical music. The story follows a family from playtime to dreamtime as they journey through the nursery, the park, the streets of Olde London and then off to bed. A rich variety of great classical lullabies, rounds for family singing and traditional English songs as well as pieces from the Leider, Romantic Opera and Classical Orchestral traditions are featured.

Excerpts from Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Schubert, Pachelbel and Tchaikovsky are woven into a colourful musical collage with classic poetry from three centuries – William Blake (1700s), Eugene Fields (1800s) and Dennis Lee (1900s) – with poems written and performed by today’s children.

This collections is both entertaining and educational, but this HDCD version can stand-alone in its own right as an audiophile recording. It is widely used by audiophiles as a reference for voices and as a demonstration of wide and vivid musical soundstage.

Q&A: My kids are destructive how to solve a problem?

February 8, 2011 by BabyCare

Question by Lola K: My kids are destructive how to solve a problem?
My 3 year old and 2 year old share a room because there simply isn’t room for them to have their own room. This causes a lot of late night playing and it’s quite a struggle getting them to sleep at night. My biggest problem has been their room. I used to have a toy box in it until they pushed it up to the opposite wall and used it to climb on top of the shelf I have mounted high so that they couldn’t reach it. Then they get under their beds and have kicked and broken several of the boards in the box spring. I have no where to keep their toys b/c I had to remove the toy box after the climbing adventure and the low shelf with all of their books and stuffed animals (which was wicker) they toppled over and stomped until it broke. I know if I put in something heavier they’ll really hurt themselves so thats out of the question, I just don’t know what to do with their things!!! The closet isn’t even available b/c that’s where I had to push their bureau to keep them from climbing it!
I have tried disipline. Spankings don’t seem to be getting through and I hate doing it. My husband has tried the yelling tactic, we’ve tried talking to them and explaining that its not nice and even taken some of their favorite toys from them. NOTHING disiplinary we’ve tried has helped.
They even say, “Sorry mama” and promise they won’t do it again. 5 miniutes later one of them is climbing the blinds like a latter!
Yes we do make them pick up their own messes.
We DO disipline our children especially when they any of the above. But I won’t continue to spank my children when it so obviously is not getting through. That crosses the line into abuse as far as I’m concerned. If you don’t have a better answer then please don’t answer.

Bad Dental Habits in Kids

For a healthy living it is very important that we do possess healthy dental habits so that we can keep our teeth ever glowing and we can have our beautiful smiles long lasting. So dental care should be stated by their parents for the children’s first it is quite important to remember that once the dental care practices are followed by the kids then it is quite obvious that as they become grown ups then they would definitely follow the dental care practices. It is very important for us to understand that while it is very important to follow the good dental care practices it is equally important for us to break the bad dental care practices which are included in our daily regime. As far as the bad dental practices which are concerned or followed by the children are going to the bed with a bottle, thumb or finger sucking and swallowing the tooth paste is one of the worst practices which have to be broken by the parents in order to make the dental practices of their children fairly good.

Getting on to the bed with a bottle:

The result of this action that is sending your dear ones with a bottle of any substance other than water will definitely cause severe tooth decay to your kids. The sugar content which is present in the liquid stays to the tooth for a long time and this in turn causes bacteria on the tooth thus causing the tooth to decay. The mixture of sugar along with the acid causes the formation of a type of acid that eats through the enable and causes cavities. This situation of sending a child with a bottle in the nights is described as bottle mouth by the dentists when this practice is repeatedly done. Although this is not an easy habit which can be broken easily but one thing which can be done is that the quantity of the liquid can be reduced slowly on an every day basis and in the end the child can only be given water.

Thumb sucking

This is considered as a bad practice because this could eventually cause the formation of buck teeth that would definitely require an orthodontic treatment. Majority of the children would stop this habit on their own when they are in the ages of 2-3 years but often this habit tends to be very difficult to be broken when it begins.

Intake of tooth paste

Brushing your child’s teeth on a daily basis is a major accomplishment for both the child ad the parent, it is quite important hat you take care of the fact that the child does not intake tooth paste, this is quite an easy task to break. It is possible when you ask your child to take pea sized tooth paste which is very much sufficient to get your child to brush his/her teeth. You will also have to teach your child how to brush the teeth and once he gets the hang of it and then you can easily see that the child does not swallow the tooth paste.

You know those Scholastic book orders kids get from school?

Blueberries for Sal
by jdeleon5

Question by arabeesk: You know those Scholastic book orders kids get from school?
My sister (third grader) got one of those today and I looked through it with her. I was wondering if any of you have ever heard or read some of these titles, or know any kids who’ve read them?

King of the Wind ~ Marguerite Henry
The Willoughbys ~ Lois Lowry
Fairest or Princess Academy ~ Gail Carson Levine
The Invention of Hugo Cabret ~ Brian Selznick
Christmas in Camelot: Magic Treehouse ~ Mary Pope Osborn
On Christmas Eve ~ Ann M Martin
The Secret School ~ Avi
Rascal ~ Sterling North

Or how about these?
Granny Torrelli Makes Soup ~ Sharon Creech
Blueberries For Sal ~ Robert McCloskey
If You Give a Cat a Cupcake ~ Laura Numeroff
Zen Shorts and Zen Ties ~ both by Jon J Muth
Don’t Bump The Glump!: And Other Fantasies ~ Shel Silverstein

I want to get her and my younger brother (1st grade) some books (not from the Scholastic thing though) and these sounded like good ones. I’ve heard of some of the authors and titles, but I just wanted other opinions. Are these good books?
I’ve read Ella Enchanted, The Giver, Gathering Blue, and books by Sharon Creech when I was younger. Shel Silverstein too! I love Where the Sidewalk Ends and The Giving Tree. So yeah, I pretty much think that the ones by them should be good, but I wondered if anyone had read/heard of the others. I’ve never heard of Zen Shorts/Zen Ties
before, but I like the illustrations. My brother likes pictures, after all!

And Kelsey ~ Somewhere in my endless tabs, bookmarks, and notes hides A Mango Shaped Space. I’ve been meaning to get it for her for a while. I think I’ll go to the library tomorrow. Yup, the library is definitely a plan.
Yeah, I like that they’re still around. Looking through them is always fun. I never had an allowance BUT I would spend my birthday and/or lunch money on books since my parents for some strange reason didn’t like for us to spend so much time reading. . .

Thanks, Blue Coral, I didn’t realize I’d had Gail Carson Levine writing Princess Academy :)

Thanks guys. You’re all awesome!

You can NEVER go wrong with Shel Silverstein.

The Giving Tree 40th Anniversary Edition Book with CD

“Once there was a tree . . . and she loved a little boy.” So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein.

Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk . . . and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave.

This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another’s capacity to love in return.

To say that this particular apple tree is a “giving tree” is an understatement. In Shel Silverstein’s popular tale of few words and simple line drawings, a tree starts out as a leafy playground, shade provider, and apple bearer for a rambunctious little boy. Making the boy happy makes the tree happy, but with time it becomes more challenging for the generous tree to meet his needs. When he asks for money, she suggests that he sell her apples. When he asks for a house, she offers her branches for lumber. When the boy is old, too old and sad to play in the tree, he asks the tree for a boat. She suggests that he cut her down to a stump so he can craft a boat out of her trunk. He unthinkingly does it. At this point in the story, the double-page spread shows a pathetic solitary stump, poignantly cut down to the heart the boy once carved into the tree as a child that said “M.E. + T.” “And then the tree was happy… but not really.” When there’s nothing left of her, the boy returns again as an old man, needing a quiet place to sit and rest. The stump offers up her services, and he sits on it. “And the tree was happy.” While the message of this book is unclear (Take and take and take? Give and give and give? Complete self-sacrifice is good? Complete self-sacrifice is infinitely sad?), Silverstein has perhaps deliberately left the book open to interpretation. (All ages) –Karin Snelson

Runny Babbit: A Billy Sook

Runny Babbit lent to wunch
And heard the saitress way,
“We have some lovely stabbit rew –
Our Special for today.”

From the legendary creator of Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, and The Giving Tree comes an unforgettable new character in children’s literature.

Welcome to the world of Runny Babbit and his friends Toe Jurtle, Skertie Gunk, Rirty Dat, Dungry Hog, Snerry Jake, and many others who speak a topsy-turvy language all their own.

So if you say, “Let’s bead a rook
That’s billy as can se,”
You’re talkin’ Runny Babbit talk,
Just like mim and he.

Taken in dall smoses, this self-proclaimed “billy sook” is a fun-filled new (posthumously published) offering from children’s poet Shel Silverstein, creator of Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, and other favorites. Completed prior to the poet’s death in 1999, Runny Babbit was a work in progress for more than 20 years, and is populated by the likes of Runny Babbit, Toe Jurtle, Ploppy Sig, Polly Dorkupine, and Pilly Belican (who owns the Sharber Bop), all denizens of the green woods where letter-flipping runs rampant. In this madcap world, pea soup is sea poup, Capture the Flag is Fapture the Clag, and snow boots are bow snoots. Each poem incorporates the same kind of switcheroo wordplay found in “Runny’s Hew Nobby:” Runny Babbit knearned to lit,/ And made a swat and heater,/ And now he sadly will admit/ He bight have done it metter.” (Here, in one of many winningly simple line drawings, R. B. sits knitting one very long sleeve, which is labeled as such.) Children who have some fluency in reading will enjoy this bonsensical nook the most. (Ages 7 to 12) –Karin Snelson
