Parents will have plenty of trouble synchronizing their personal sleeping pattern to that of a newly born baby. They will often feel tired and sleepy at a time when the little one seems to be wide awake and in the mood for some playtime. On another occasion, a parent might want to gently nudge or playfully touch the cheeks of the little one at a time when all that is on the little one’s mind is sleep. The truth is, during the first few weeks it can be a nightmare just keeping track of a baby’s sleeping patterns.

Babies will typically sleep in short spells (2-3 hours) and will generally sleep when they are tired. New parents probably wonder why babies often wake up in the night and can’t seem to get sleep. It is simple – they don’t know the difference between night and day. Sleep specialist Dr. Shelly Weiss, recommends that at night, when feeding her baby, a mother should make it quiet and short and should put the baby back to bed in a dark place. During the day feeding should be more fun and lively to give the child the impression that they should be up during the day and sleep during the night.

In the first 3 to 4 months, it is difficult for newborns to put themselves to sleep. There will however be signs that a baby is tired because normally after 10-20 minutes of playtime, which might be just a quiet cuddle or some time stretching out (or even kicking on a blanket), they get tired and want to sleep. Parents need to be on the lookout for signs of wanting to sleep – for instance crying. With time, babies will slowly begin to associate certain activities or processes to sleeping and this will eventually become the routine, but it also takes them a few months before they actually realise that they need rest. Oftentimes a newborn will be fussy because they need sleep, but continually wake themselves just as theyre dropping off.

For instance, it is natural for a newborn to fall asleep while sucking at the breast, a bottle, or a pacifier. The trouble is that when a baby always falls asleep this way, he learns to associate sucking with falling asleep and over time, he cannot fall asleep any other way. This can lead to parents experiencing problems when they try to wean their baby off a pacifier and can lead to thumb sucking in later life, which in turn has been associated with adulthood smoking.

Parents can promote healthy sleep habits by creating sleeping environments and moods for the little ones by rocking them gently, nurturing them or cuddling them to help them fall asleep. After 3 or 4 months its is recommended that parents teach the little ones to learn to fall asleep all by themselves, and this can be achieved by developing a bedtime routine of stories and cuddles is a quiet, dimly lit bedroom.

It is not healthy for new parents to indulge in sleep deprivation like numerous experts might suggest. Instead, sleep when the baby sleeps; something you can easily do if you keep track of the sleeping patterns of the little ones.

Juanita’s Kitchen

In the corner of a tiny kitchen is a hole drilled into the wall; a small marble has worked its way in. A four-year old child sits in the corner of that kitchen; slowly, patiently with his index finger he works at that marble that will not be extricated. But it is the mind of that child that is quietly formulating one of life’s troubling concepts. Nearby, mother methodically kneads and wedges the masa for tortillas being freshly heated on a hot skillet.

The Value Of Power-Napping

Power-napping is a practice that will maximise the benefits of sleep against time. It is a sort of supplement to normal sleep, mostly when one is not getting enough sleep. James Maas, a Social Psychologist at Cornell University came up with the expression ‘power-nap’, a short sleep ending just before the beginning of deep sleep. It is intended to refresh and revitalize someone especially if they are having a sleep deficit.

The Dynamics Of White Vs Pink Noise

While there are many devices that employ so-called white noise for the purpose of conversation masking in offices or sound therapy to help aid sleep, many machines actually employ pink noise, which while still beneficial, is somewhat softer and less disruptive. However, as there are really no simple mathematical models to create pink noise it is usually generated by filtering white noise.

Stay Dry Cloth Diapers

Those unfamiliar with modern cloth diapers may associate cloth diapers with a baby feeling wetness.  While that is common occurrence with many cloth diapers, stay dry diapers offer something different.

Stay dry cloth diapers feature a layer of material against the baby’s skin that moisture passes through.  Microfleece and suedecloth are popular fabics used in cloth diapers that wick wetness away from the skin.  When your baby wets a stay dry diaper the wetness passes through the microfleece or suedecloth against your baby’s skin onto the absorbent material under the microfleece or suedecloth.  Unless the cloth diaper is saturated the stay dry material keeps your baby dry.  While cloth diapers are designed to be changed with each wetting, the stay dry material may help infants who are more prone to diaper rash.  They are also beneficial to nighttime usage.

Pocket diapers are the most common version of stay dry diapers.  They feature a stay dry material against the baby’s skin and an outer waterproof material.  Between the two layers is a pocket where you place absorbent material.   The Fuzzi Bunz Perfect Size pocket diaper is a popular variety.  It features stay dry microfleece with soft outer waterproof material and fastens with snaps.  The Drybees Pocket diapers feature a stay dry suedecloth material and fasten with easy Velcro-like closures.

There are also some versions of pocket diapers that come with some absorbency already sewn into the diaper.  Pockets are used to insert extra material for heavy wetters, naps, or nighttime.  The Thirsties Pocket All in One diaper and the Drybees Hybrid All in One diaper both feature a pocket with absorbency already sewn into the diaper.

Probably the most common version of the pocket diaper is the one size pocket diaper.  These come with adjustable sizing, waterproof outer material, inner stay dry material, and a pocket to put absorbent material.    Some popular versions are Smartipants One Size Diaper with Smart Sleeve Insert, Thirsties Duo Cloth Diaper, BumGenius 3.0 One Size Cloth Diaper, Wahmies One Size Pocket Diaper with Snaps or with Hooks, Baby Kangas One Size Cloth Diaper, Happy Heinys One Size Pocket Diaper with Snaps or Aplix, and Fuzzi Bunz One Size Pocket Diaper with Hip Snaps.

Whichever version of a pocket diaper you choose; the stay dry option is a great choice.  Some parents use them full time and others for only nighttime and naptime.  Pocket diapers truly are a modern cloth diaper.

Amy has been cloth diapering for over eight years and has enjoyed using different types of cloth diapers on her children.  Visit Thanks Mama for a wide variety of cloth diapers.

| Question by Tabbitatt: How do cloth diapers work and what do i need to buy?
i want to use cloth diapers on my lil one when they are born but i dont know which are best to get and what exactly to get. I understand you need to buy the prefold and the outer waterproof part..can someone describe to me how this works. Also how many for each baby stage do i need…ie: new born etc etc

Best answer:

Answer by Doodlestuff
I would recommend joining a cloth diaper group for all sorts of suggestions. There are several on Yahoo!Groups. I made diapers for my cousins and another woman. The pattern below is what I would have used had it been available at the time (it is a one size; fits all sizes).

The prefolds sold in stores are TOTALLY WORTHLESS. They are used for baby burp pads. They are not good enough for holding moisture. If this is the way you want to go, then buy them online.

The Benefits of Adult Disposable Diapers

Perhaps the most recognized form of incontinence absorption is
the adult disposable diaper. We have all seen television
advertisements for top selling brands like Depends. Adult
disposable diapers are similar to diapers used by young children
and are very absorptive.

Adult disposable diapers are made from gel-like polymer beads
that, when dry, are very small, about the same size as table
salt. When they become wet, they expand up to 800 times their
original size. These beads are the key component in disposable
diapers and are the reason that they are super-absorbent.
Incontinence sufferers can choose from a wide range of
absorbencies from light to severe incontinence. The beads, and
all other materials used in the diapers, are non-toxic to
humans, making for a safe and effective means of controlling
wetness. Additionally, adult disposable diapers often have
elastic in the leg portion that can further prevent leaking
urine from escaping.

Adult disposable diapers come not only in varying degrees of
absorbencies, but also in various sizes. The most commonly
purchased sizes are small, medium and large. You should choose a
size that will fit snugly yet comfortably. Diapers that are too
large may result in an uncomfortable fit and leave room for
leakage onto the body and clothing.

People who use the disposable adult diapers like them for many
reasons. Firstly, they are generally more accessible and do not
need to be washed and dried. There is no need for additional
plastic pants. Others claim that you are better able to keep the
skin dry by using a very absorptive adult disposable diaper than
a reusable cloth diaper. Cloth diapers have to be changed nearly
immediately after becoming soaked, which could pose a problem if
you are unable to change it quickly. Disposable diapers need to
be changed soon after wetting, but can handle much more
absorption than their cloth counterparts

adult diaper rash, as well as where to buy adult diapers and

| Question by Sasha: Reusable Diapers ? Pros and Cons anyone?
I’m pregnant with my first child (Girl Due May 2nd 2010) and I just want to know the PROS, CONS, and OPINIONS about Reusable diapers :-)

Best answer:

Answer by mswnana
Cotton diapers let air in so your baby does not have rashes.
Disposable diapers are convenient, but end up in landfills.
Cotton diapers need to be washed, and if they are very dirty, should be emptied into the commode before washing them.
I personally prefer cotton diapers because you can use them over and over again without disposing of them in a landfill.
I would use disposable diapers for 6 weeks after giving birth because it will be hard for you to wash them.
