Your body is adjusted to this schedule. You CAN adjust the circadian rhythm to your new need.. it just takes discipline and time.

There are a few ways to do this.

The quickest, but doesn’t always work.

– Wake up several hours earlier (ie: get less sleep) so the following evening you will be tired enough to fall asleep at an earlier time. Continue making yourself get up earlier, .. you can’t expect yourself to go to sleep at 9pm and still sleep to 10am. You need to keep it in the 8hour range. So go to bed at 1am, and get up at 6-7am. Hopefully the next day/evening you are very tired and can fall asleep in the evening at a desirable time. Then get up again at 6-7am.. however this time you will have had adequate ‘amount’ of sleep. Though you may not feel refreshed because of the rhythm change. Continue doing this for as long as it takes until your new schedule ‘feels’ right.

Now some people just can’t get up earlier and fall asleep much earlier. Sometimes you get up early but still stay up late. In this case you would want to continue forcing yourself to get up until the rhythm changes.. however — if you have the time you can do it this way.

Increase the time in which you stay AWAKE by 1 hour every day. Continue to do this until you have rotated your schedule around to the exact sleep/wake time you desire.

IE: Mon – 1am – 9am, Tu – 2am – 10am, Wed – 3am – 11am, Th – 4am – 12pm and so on until your sleep time is whatever you desire it to be.

This incremental shifting of the schedule is often easier for some people .. ie: easier to stay up longer than wake up earlier.

Though again with any of this to be successful you will need to be disciplined and not nap, not allow yourself to sleep in,.. get up when you plan despite how many hours of sleep you acquired.

The majority of sleep cycle patterns become erratic due to the individual erraticly not sticking to a set ‘wake’ time.

There are many people in the world who could just go to bed at 9pm and get up at 5-6am just by laying down at 9pm instead of 1am. Though this isn’t you, and isn’t me either. I envy those who can sleep at any time and further fall asleep in seconds or a minute or two. This type of sleep just isn’t in the cards for all of us (at least until modern medicine makes progress) — for those whose minds are a bit more complex.. some ‘training’ is necessary.

Good luck,

The Going-To-Bed Book
by Ben Dodson

Question by Mr. LOL: Why does book on tape puts me to sleep?
I’m a subscriber to Audible, the book on “tape” downloading site.

I’ve got a lot of downloads but the problem is when I listen to it at night time like when I read a book before going to bed, after about 20 minutes I’m asleep!

Why is that?

Actually for insomniacs, it’s a great method to fall asleep.

Sing Me to Sleep Mommy

Echoing the love of God as the heavenly father, 10 artists of both the sacred and secular traditions spread motherly love on Sing Me to Sleep, Mommy, a gently inspirational recording for wee ones and their parents. Sandi Patty’s “A Mother’s Prayer” begins with a child sleepily uttering the all-too-familiar words: “Now I lay me down to sleep.” Veronica Petrucci’s “Star Against the Night” draws from both traditional gospel and R&B balladry, “My Prayer for You” shows disco diva Donna Summer’s softer side, and Sierra’s overwhelming sentiment on “He Gave Me You” is gratitude. Other featured mommies include Debby Boone, Kathy Troccoli, Crystal Lewis, and Lari White. –Paige La Grone

Parents will have plenty of trouble synchronizing their personal sleeping pattern to that of a newly born baby. They will often feel tired and sleepy at a time when the little one seems to be wide awake and in the mood for some playtime. On another occasion, a parent might want to gently nudge or playfully touch the cheeks of the little one at a time when all that is on the little one’s mind is sleep. The truth is, during the first few weeks it can be a nightmare just keeping track of a baby’s sleeping patterns.

Babies will typically sleep in short spells (2-3 hours) and will generally sleep when they are tired. New parents probably wonder why babies often wake up in the night and can’t seem to get sleep. It is simple – they don’t know the difference between night and day. Sleep specialist Dr. Shelly Weiss, recommends that at night, when feeding her baby, a mother should make it quiet and short and should put the baby back to bed in a dark place. During the day feeding should be more fun and lively to give the child the impression that they should be up during the day and sleep during the night.

In the first 3 to 4 months, it is difficult for newborns to put themselves to sleep. There will however be signs that a baby is tired because normally after 10-20 minutes of playtime, which might be just a quiet cuddle or some time stretching out (or even kicking on a blanket), they get tired and want to sleep. Parents need to be on the lookout for signs of wanting to sleep – for instance crying. With time, babies will slowly begin to associate certain activities or processes to sleeping and this will eventually become the routine, but it also takes them a few months before they actually realise that they need rest. Oftentimes a newborn will be fussy because they need sleep, but continually wake themselves just as theyre dropping off.

For instance, it is natural for a newborn to fall asleep while sucking at the breast, a bottle, or a pacifier. The trouble is that when a baby always falls asleep this way, he learns to associate sucking with falling asleep and over time, he cannot fall asleep any other way. This can lead to parents experiencing problems when they try to wean their baby off a pacifier and can lead to thumb sucking in later life, which in turn has been associated with adulthood smoking.

Parents can promote healthy sleep habits by creating sleeping environments and moods for the little ones by rocking them gently, nurturing them or cuddling them to help them fall asleep. After 3 or 4 months its is recommended that parents teach the little ones to learn to fall asleep all by themselves, and this can be achieved by developing a bedtime routine of stories and cuddles is a quiet, dimly lit bedroom.

It is not healthy for new parents to indulge in sleep deprivation like numerous experts might suggest. Instead, sleep when the baby sleeps; something you can easily do if you keep track of the sleeping patterns of the little ones.

Juanita’s Kitchen

In the corner of a tiny kitchen is a hole drilled into the wall; a small marble has worked its way in. But it is the mind of that child that is quietly formulating one of life’s troubling concepts. It is intended to refresh and revitalize someone especially if they are having a sleep deficit.

It could actually have a better effect if you daydream about the right things. Daydream about what you want the most in your life – really visualize it and it can be very valuable.

Do you want to get to sleep faster or deeper or both? I’d say the answer kind of depends on what you want.

Good Luck,

How Do I Help My Baby To Sleep Better?

June 23, 2010 by BabyCare

Baby sucking fingers... or pacifier
Image via Wikipedia

Sleeping problems are often caused by poor sleeping associations created unknowingly by parents. A sleep association is something that a baby learns that signals sleep to them.

But this is easily corrected, especially when they are still a few months old.

Sleep is a high priority for all new parents.

As every parent knows, the early days can be really difficult, as babies are up every few hours in the night looking for a feed. Some babies sleep really well from the outset, but these children are rare indeed. The majority of parents experience difficulties with sleep deprivation, and unfortunately for some, this can last well into the toddler years and beyond.

So how do you create a better sleeping environment for your baby?

There are lots of things you can do to help create the right sleep associations and avoid the bad ones. A sleep association is essentially what the baby associates with going to sleep – in other words it is a learned response. Babies are clever because they get to know these associations by repitition – the more you do a certain behaviour before they sleep, the more they associate that behaviour with sleep itself. So for example, if you always bath the baby before bedtime, they will get to know in time that bathtime signals sleep time.

The trick is to create sleep associations which work without reliance on the parent to help the child to sleep

Some examples of poor sleep associations includes:

  • rocking baby to sleep
  • holding baby to sleep
  • patting/stroking baby
  • nursing or feeding baby to sleep
  • use of a dummy

Why are these poor sleep associations?

Because they work by allowing the baby to rely on either you or a pacifier to help them sleep. This creates long-term problems because each time your child wakes at night, they will require your assistance to help put them back to sleep.

Imagine you always rock baby to sleep. As wonderfully nurturing as it seems, what will you do when the child gets older and heavier and puts pressure on your back because you are struggling to rock your toddler to sleep – something that can take an hour or so in some cases?

The best solution is creating sleep associations that do NOT rely on you to help them sleep. These can include:

  • creating a routine
  • winding down
  • dimming the lights and speaking softly
  • placing tired baby in cot in the dark and calming them down by speaking softly and not picking them up
  • differentiating between night and day
  • removing the dummy before baby falls asleep
  • never allowing baby to sleep in your arms
  • always let baby sleep in the cot

These are just some suggestions, but there are many other things you can and should do to improve sleep. If you stick to your guns, you should see an improvement in sleep patterns within a week, and certainly within two weeks. With older children, you may need to resort to sleep training methods to help them sleep soundly. Learning the correct behaviour takes time, but the above mentioned ideas are the best way to help a newborn learn the correct sleep habits that will set them up for a lifetime.

How to Sleep with a Nightlight

May 15, 2010 by Rose Carning

People suffering from nyctophobia or fear from the dark must sleep with nightlight on. Children are especially prone to having illuminated room during sleep. Having some sort of light during night comes very handy if you have a habit of nocturnal visits to the toilet of the fridge, or you just want a glass of water after midnight. However, if you use night light, you might want to reconsider after reading this.

A study done at the University of Pennsylvania suggested that babies younger then 2 years old sleeping with a nightlight have greater risk of suffering nearsightedness later in childhood. Children who slept with the night light on had more then double chance to develop myopia then the children who slept in dark. This study was however, contradicted by researches done at Ohio State University and New England College of Optometry. These showed that the percentage of nearsighted children who slept with the nightlights is about the same as the children who slept in the dark. Karla Zadnik, a co-author of the Ohio study said that the previous results were influenced by the fact that researchers didn’t take into account parents’ nearsightedness, unlike her team.

Also, there are some connections between night lights and serious problems related to sleeping disorders, impaired abilities and general feeling of tiredness, even if we had a good night sleep. It seems that our body needs complete darkness in order to be fully rested during the night.

More serious reason for concern is recent suggestion that lack of darkness during sleep can lead to cancer. Professor Russell Foster, who teaches visual neuroscience at Imperial College in London claims that our organism doesn’t produce melatonin unless we sleep in dark room. Tests done on animals showed that melatonin can protect them from developing a cancer, and even though it is not quite clear what it does in human body, there are voices who suggest that it can have similar role. If it is right, this theory could quickly lead to the expulsion of night lights from our bedrooms.

There are already studies that have shown that night shift workers, who are exposed to strong lights during night, have much higher risks of developing certain forms of cancer.

Even if this is established as a medical fact it won’t be an issue for those people who can turn their night lights off. But what of those who are still more afraid of monsters in their closets then serious illness? They may not have the luxury of turning the switch off.

If you are searching for nightstand lamps be sure to browse this newest web page. This writer has also written a report on finding great back support wedge
